Review - L.G.C. Wavell Maduro

/*================================================= =================*/
/*========================== CIGAR_REVIEW ==========================*/
/*================================================= =================*/
DATE: 2006/05/21
REVIEWER: Timothy "Texan_To_The_End" Piper
CIGAR: L.G.C. Wavell Maduro
SIZE: 5.0" X 50
ORIGIN: Dominican
WRAPPER: Ecuadoran
BINDER: Nicaraguan
FILLER: Dom, Nic.
SHAPE: Box-pressed Robusto
AGE: In humidor since 2006/05/01
VENDOR: Local B&M. Singles purchased for $3.80 each.
AMBIENCE: Sunday morning 7AM, nice and cool. Pretty low humidity
and only the mildest of occasional breezes.
BEVERAGE: Coffee
APPEARANCE: Dark maduro wrapper, with enough oil content that it
comes off on the fingers. Pretty smooth surface.
PRE_LIGHT: A bit tighter than I like, but application of a
skewer took care of that. Very nice taste witl all the
things I anticipate in a good dark cigar.
DRAW: I guess the box-press makes the draw tighter than normal.
I wonder if these sat for a year if they would tend to
go back to round.
FIRST_THIRD: I've been itching to try this for a few weeks now. It
started out a bit woody with only a hint of chocolate.
The first inch tasted less good than I expected,
although improved after that.
SECOND_THIRD: The flavors started blending together nicely, but it was
lacking that buttery-type something that good well-aged
dark cigars have.
FINAL_THIRD: The body of the cigar started getting a bit soft; a sure
sign that it was a bit too moist. Taste improved
dramatically and got a bit peppery at the nub.
BURN: A bit uneven, and had to torch it twice.
ASH: Dark grey flakey ash.
SMOKE: Pretty sparse smoke that was almost blue.
STRENGTH: Medium-strong
FLAVOUR: A little too woody for maduro, with a dash of chocolate.
FINISH: Pleasant enough, with the chocolate lasting a good
30 minutes. This is an excellent cigar with coffee.
SMOKE_TIME: 40 minutes.
IMPRESSION: Admittedly this was a quite young cigar. Everything
about this cigar screamed out "I have potential! Let
me age for a while first!" So I'm putting the rest of
these towards the bottom of the humidor. I'll re-visit
them in the fall. <G> Some cigars taste pretty good
when new, but the Wavell I'd definitely recommend to
let rest for a good spell before lighting.
RATING: 7 out of a possible TEN wooden matchsticks.
COMMENTS: The 7 rating was a bit low, because of the too-young
nature of this cigar. I think it would have been an
8 or 9 with six months in the humidor.

Thanks for the nice review. I have been wanting to try that stick and now know to give it some serious humi time.

One thing puzzled me however, I have always thought that Houston and "low humidity" were mutually exclusive

No... Sometimes it's almost like southern California, but without all the tree-huggers.

Great review! I liked the detailed format. Why no astrological info?

It sounds like it needed to dry in your humi another week or two. Some B&Ms really crank up the RH. I think some of them are paranoid about damage, which I can understand to some degree. I like LGC Maduros, too.
I have a Maduro Torp drying that I bought last weekend. They also had the LCG Limitada for this year in all vitolas. As soon as I can, I'm returning for a raid on those mofos.

This is one that I always have on hand. It does get better with a little age at least 60 days longer even better. I had the same burn issue when the were OTB but after 60/90 days this dissappeared and it is a great smoke. Good review!
