601 Red Label Toro

Cigar: 601 Red Label Toro
Year: 2008
Cutter: Xikar
Lighter: Ronson Jet-Lite
Beverage: Coke Zero

Pre-cut: Very nice looking toro. The wrapper is a medium brown with no large veins. The wrapper is also covered with "tooth". Pre-light draw has hints of peppery spice and leather.

Pictures of "tooth" for those who are wondering "what is he talking about?".

1st third: This cigar starts out with the expected blast of pepper and leather. There are muted hints of earth in the background. The draw is just right and the ash is white and solid. The nose exhale offers leather and just a hint of the peppery spice.

2nd third: The cigar has leveled out now and most of the pepper has gone to the background. The leather is the dominant taste now with a hint of sweetness thrown in. The smoke is very thick and heavy. I would so far describe this cigar as medium strength and med/full bodied. The finish is long and has hints of nuts and leather.

Final third: The cigar is now offering an earthy, leathery taste with the peppery spice still lingering around in the background. The burn has been even throughout and the smoke volume has been plenty. The nose exhale is leather and a hint of spice while the finish is long and has a nutty taste that is almost sweet.

Overall this cigar is blended very well. The flavors compliment each other without overpowering one another. I have a feeling that DPG is kinda like my mom used to be in the kitchen, a pinch of this and a pinch of that. To those that don't like the sensory overload of pepper in a lot of DPG's cigars I would recommend you try this one. For those that do like it I would still recommend it. The balance of strength, body and flavors are on full display here.

I love 'em. One thing that stands out to me is that in spite of being fairly full bodied (to me) they never become over-powering, but stay flavorful and balanced almost all the way, and I nub 'em every time.

Thanks ML, I'd wondered about that expression and come to the erroneous conclusion that it meant something like "thick" as in something you can "get your teeth into". Thanks for clearing that one up!

Good review Donnie,,,,this is a very good cigar. Have you tried the 601 Green Trabuco yet? Would like to see what you think of these.

Good review, been awhile since I have smoked a 601 Red, but I know they are very good. Need to dig one out and give it a light.
