Augusto Reyes Grand Cru

Cigar: Augusto Reyes Grand Cru toro

Size: 6.25"x54

Purchased: Cigar Bid, 8/12/09, 10/$25.50

I was first introduced to Augusto Reyes cigars by a company representative who sent me a flight sampler when I posted a question here soliciting opinions of a Puros Indios sampler for sale on CI several months ago. The sampler did not include this stick and frankly, I wasn't blown away by what I smoked. They were okay smokes, but nothing that would inspire me to buy them in quantity. Still, I was impressed by the company's generosity, so I decided to try a new blend from them when a CBid offer came around.

Initial impressions: An elegant-looking cigar, from the smooth, chocolate-brown wrapper to the gold foot band and the impressive gold, purple and silver band. The pre-light draw was easy. This is definitely a well-made cigar. It gives the impression of something far more expensive.

This is an impressive cigar. It won't knock you out of your chair with power. It is more like a fine wine, flavorful and smooth throughout. You can tell from the first draw that this is a cigar meant to be savored, and I did just that for about an hour. A mild woody flavor prevailed. It was a pleasant contrast to the Padron 3000 that preceded it. There were no nasty surprises, in either burn or taste. No spice or nicotine buzz, just a smooth, enjoyable smoke from beginning to end. The smoke is moderate, just enough to let you know it is there, but it won't leave you in a cloud.

This cigar deserves a lot more hype than it has gotten. At the price, it is a relative steal. I have had far less enjoyable smokes at three or four times the price. I will definitely be picking up more of these once these are gone.
