Cubao Maduro Robusto

Cigar: Cubao Maduro Robusto 4 7/8 X 50
Year: 2009
Cutter: Xikar
Lighter: Ronson Jet-Lite
Beverage: Coke Zero

Pre-cut: The cigar has a smooth, dark wrapper and is adorned with a second band that simply states "Maduro". The cigar is firm and feels heavy in the hand. Pre-light draw is earthy with a slight hint of spice.

1st third: This cigar starts out with a taste of earth and leather. The draw is perfect. There are slight hints of spice and just a little sweetness on the finish which is not short but is not as long as I prefer. The nose exhale offers leather with just a hint of peppey spice.

2nd third: The earthy taste has picked up and become the dominate flavor. The leather has almost disappeared except for hints of it on the nose exhale. There is a hint of sweet spice that lingers on the palate for a moment. The smoke is plentiful and the cigar seems to be well constructed.

Final third: The spice is completely gone now and the earthy taste has receded a bit. There is a slight sweetness that I would guess could be attributed to the maduro wrapper. The finish is still a medium length and the nose exhale still offers hints of leather and spice.

Overall this cigar was about middle of the road for a Pepin. The flavors were enjoyable but the cigar offered very little in the way of complexity. The construction was excellent and the draw was near perfect. Not sure of the price on these but I would buy them at a $5.00 or so price point.

Thank you for the chance to try this cigar Kerri.

Re: Cubao Maduro Robusto

I basically had the same thoughts as you did with the cigar! However, I did hit what seemed like a sour spot in the cigar. But I figured it was because it had only a little time in the humi, and then it went into my travel humidor for a little while when my A/C was broke. And then it went back into my humi whenever I got everything taken care of. But, I still enjoyed the cigar surprisingly. Hadn't enjoyed maduro cigars in awhile. Might make the Cubao Maduro and Camacho Corojo Maduro my favorite maduros!

As always, excellent review!

The regular Cubao is one of my favorites. I hope this is as good or better.

These sound great, thanks for the review! I too love your review format.

The regular Cubao line improves a lot with age, so I'd bet these will too.

I love the regular Cubaos and was excited to try the maduro version. I picked up two toros over the weekend and I must say this is not a cigar I enjoy. It was very sweet with almost no spice after the initial couple puffs. If I smoked this unbanded I would swear it was an Excalibur maduro. Nothing about the taste indicates it was blended by Pepin.

To each his own but I'll stick with the regular Cubaos.
