Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
I bought a 10-pack of these off CI waaay back in like April, I had one before and it was okay, nothing to write home about. I was probably drunk at the time, so I wasn't really paying attention.
Anyway, I get home tonight and am in the mood for a stick, dig around in the humi and decide for something a bit different. How about an exotic perfecto shape? 6 x 60 (at its fattest point), Costa Rican maduro wrapper...seems like it could be a nice stick. Light it up, draw is hard at first because of the fine points. I get a bit of nice, slightly tangy woody tobacco notes at the beginning. Things rapidly go downhill from there. The predominant (read: only) flavor is green, unripe, bitter air. No depth, nuance, or "good" flavors. I am reminded of eating an unripe banana...you know, the bitter, crispy, green ones. I try to perservere but only make it through two ashings before I have to deposit this turd in the flower bed and drink a tall glass of water to get the taste out of my mouth. I was reminded while smoking it of a quote from the sensitive palate of Homer J. Simpson: "A bland, timid entry, suitable perhaps for patients recovering from surgery." That pretty well sums it up. I was beyond put off by this cigar, and I've smoked a lot of crappy ones in my day. I didn't bother to take pictures of that rocket I smoked, but for your viewing pleasure I snapped a quick one of another one I have sitting in the humi. These were a "limited release" a few months back and are probably not readily available anymore...because of that, you can consider yourselves lucky. ![]() |

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
Thanks for the review. It summarizes my Ghurka experience well. They make so many blends, and differentiate most of them with only subtle changes in the band color scheme, that it's impossible to keep track of them all. I've smoked a few good Ghurkas, and I've smoked several that were just okay. For me, it's just not worth the hassle of figuring out what's good, and then trying to make sure I get the right one the next time around.

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
When I first tried these I got a bad ammonia taste to it. I haven't had another since and will try them again after about a year of age or so.

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
I think I tried just about every blend Ghurka made. I wish I could get back all the dime and time.

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
I have to admit I enjoyed my Blue Steel. I have the perfecto and robustos resting for about 3 months. Smoked one of each in the last month and both had a nice citrusy taste to it. I'm not good at describing some flavors yet but I would buy again.

IMO not worth it for the price though.

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
I keep trying these cigars for some insane reason but have yet to find one I like. Time to give them up.

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
Thanks for the review. I really like some gurkha cigars and I really do not like others. I was thinking about ordering some of these to try but after a few bad reviews here I think I'll pass. Thanks again for the heads up.

Re: Gurkha Blue Steel Perfecto
Hi Folks,
I bought 5 different marks 25-75 deep each of Gurkha a few month back and I'd echo the sentiments of some here that they are similar. I found them to be nothing more than decent daily (meaning when I don't have time to concentrate on them) smokes. It's made me reluctant to buy anything more from them. Over packaged and overpriced. Good smoking, Pete |

MSRP is simply a number. My $16 MSRP Gurkhas aren't as good as the maduro $8 sticks and the I believe that they may be made by the same manufacturer as the Padilla Obsidian (and possibly more). Similar wrappers, construction, taste and smoke. They're good but not, imho, super-premium cigars. Bottom line is how does it smoke and the packaging tastes terrible! Good smoking, Pete |
