DPG Cuban Classic 1977 Corona review

First of all, I am not big on Corona sized cigars but this one was pretty good.

Brand: Don Pepin Garcia
Line: Cuban Classic or "Black Label"
Size: Corona, 5.5 x 38

Wrapper: Nicaraguan Corojo
Binder: Nicaraguan
Filler: Nicaraguan

Drink: Corona, extra cold and slightly icy with two limes

Pre-light:

The cigar is pretty small, smaller then I usually like them but my B&M only had this size on hand. There were no imperfections that I could find, the cigar smelt peppery and dry(it was well humidified, it just smelt "Dry")with a bit of wood. The cap cut easily enough, and the draw was ladened with a sort of dryness and a spicy pepperyness, the wrapper was a nice shade of golden brown and somewhat veiny. The band is simplistic and really sets the tone of the cigar for me, I just like the way it looks. The draw was disappointing because it felt really tight, so I was bit concerned that maybe I would not enjoy this stick.

1st Third:

I was a bit disappointed as there was nothing going on here, except the occaisional slight tease of wood or pepper. Plenty of smoke dispite a deceptively tight draw.

2nd Third:

WHOA PEPPER BOMB ON THE TRANSITION!

Okay, this is where the cigar really picked up and became enjoyable. Lot's of pepper and wood that was smooth, there was also a slight tobacco flavor that wasn't too bad either.

Final Third:

Tobacco and wood flavors took over for the final third with a slight spice or pepper flavor mixed with leather. The cigar continued to be smooth, but was much more mellow then the 2nd third and you could really feel a bit of nicotine here as well.

Conclusion:

Not bad, I think I have to give the robusto's a go though as I prefer a longer smoke and a bigger ring cigar. I did enjoy the cigar towards the 2nd and final third more then in the begining.

No burn issues to speak of, construction is top notch, flavor was much better into the 2nd and final thirds, I'd rate the DPG Cuban Classic an 89/100.

Pretty tasty smoke, but I'm gonna need to give this one another go before I can definitively say whether or not I'd buy more. If the next one I have is more like the 2nd and Third portions of this cigar I'd probably have to buy a box or half a box to keep on hand.

As your tastes develop more I think you will appreciate this cigar more but you did a good solid review here and that is what it's about. Trying new and different size cigars and gaining an appreciation for each one. Keep them coming.

I find the blue label so much better. This smoke just seems to plain but it's also a lot cheaper too.

My favorite size in the Cuban Classic is the Toro

Haven't tried all the sizes but the perla is very good and it is flavorful from start to finish. I like the corona better than the robusto for flavor but it is a relatively short smoke.

Thanks for the review

When you say blue?

do you mean these?

Blue: Barclay Rex: Fine Tobacconists Since 1910

Sometimes these names really confuse me

Don Pepin Garcia Blue Label

I do like the Blue's, I think they are a bit spicier, stronger, more complex than the Black label. The Black label is good and strong, but never to the point of being overwhelming, and for the money it's an awesome smoke. I stick with the Blacks, but if the Blue was consistently cheaper, I'd probably buy those!

Re: DPG Cuban Classic 1977 Corona review

I just burned a robusto black label Cuban Classic at lunch in the park. I agree with your review mostly, but mine never turned into a pepper bomb (which is fine with me, I am not a big pepper fan). It just made a canoe and was ho-hum ok for the last 2/3. My least favorite DPG so far. I have loved all other DPG I have had. I rate this stick ok for $2 and I would not buy for any price above that.

One thing to remember is that Pepin's like a lower humidity level. 63%-65% seems to work best.

These are the new bands but I have both in my humidor....I think the newer sticks don't taste as good as the older ones (the band you pictured). Something different about the wrapper and the smell from the cut cap is muted. The older sticks had that wonderful pre light aroma after you cut it.

I also love the black label.....bought a box a good while back but wonder now if that's changed too like the blues.
