Really cheap cigar review

Now please dont kill me on this. I dont think I have quite the refined pallate as a lot of members, but I do know what I like.
I had been smoking the same 4 or 5 cigars(and I mean types, and not the same cigars. lol) for the last 40 years.
When I first purchased my first humidor a few months ago, it was from Thompsons. A starter humidor with a bunch of their low priced cigars.
One of them was the don lugo in robusto size.
They smelled bad and werent the best, but smokeable when I first got them.
They have been down for about two months in the humidor and I had occassion to smoke one yesterday. A beautiful fall day. Now basically I got them for free. A humidor , hygro, credo, and lighter for 25 bucks including shipping. With 25 cigars.
So I tell you, I used a standard guillotene cut on it, and put the flame to it, and it lit up and toasted right away. Put it to my mouth and kissed it once, and it was burning great, no more fire needed.
The smoke was one dimensional from beginning to end, but not unpleasing.
The smoke and cigar were cool, from beginning to the nub. The flavor was cedary all the way through. The first half had some hints of newly mowed lawn, pleasant.
No touch ups needed. Ash only had to be tapped about 3 times. For a retail smoke of 1.20 a piece approx in catalog, not bad. I know they are not the greatest, but I have smoked a lot of more expensive cigars that werent as good or at least no better, such as some of the uppmans, macadnudos, and r and j and some others. And I do like those brands and some of their cigars a lot.
So I know this is a very plebian cigar, but not bad for a yard cigar, or a pass out cigar.
It burned for fifty minutes, and was immune to the wind that was pretty gusty, no ash falling on your lap, stays lit, with plenty of smoke and a very comfortable draw.
Cedary flavor I enjoy. Nice chep stogie to pass out to friends who are not big smokers at a bbq, and when you dont want to get any ash blown around.
So Don Lugo robusto 50 for 69 bucks at thompsons, or if you need a humidor, look at their sales, and you can ususally get a hundred for free, with certain humidors. Just never give them your correct phone number, so you will not be bothered. I always do this with cigar vendors.
My everyday smoker is a r.p. 90 churchill. I do enjoy a great cigar, but for those times and situations the don lugo is not bad, especially if you like cedar taste.

Much regards Jerry

Hey, no apologies Jerry. Lot's of us like the decent bargin smoke. My go to, everyday, no problem smoke is a Flor de Oliva robusto. Has a sweetend cap (some might not like) not harsh. I get them about 1.4 per stick.
Personnaly I'm glad you shared this as I'll end up trying them and you did a good job with the review.
Thanks!

Re: Really cheap cigar review

I have one humidor that's almost all Thompson's. I bought 25 each of RG Santiago and Jose Girbes toros. It's not that they're horrible, there's just not much to them. Good enough for yardwork, or any time you're not really focused on the cigar. If you drop it and run over it with a mower, you're not going to shed any tears. Now, they both included 25 La Condesa, which I found to be terrible. I also bought 50 of their JAD robustos, which I think are a couple of notches above the other two.

This was all before I found out about the online cigar community, so now I know better. I wouldn't buy any of them again. For the same money, or very close to it ($1-2), there are much better cigars available. At the rate I'm smoking them, it will probably be 3-5 years before I'm seriously in the market to restock on "disposable" cigars.

Re: Really cheap cigar review

Whenver you can find a cheap cigar that is right for you that is all that matters. I don't let others chew my steak before I swallow it and neither do I let others tell me what cigars are good for me either. Personal tastes are what we like and if you enjoy a Cremosa I say smoke the shyte out of them. My problem is my tastes tend to run towards more expensive cigars but there are a few lines that help me out that are inexpensive as well.

Re: Really cheap cigar review

Ya gotta have a few budget sticks around for the yard work, fishing (in case you drop it or get guts on it), etc. I usually keep some Oliva series G or O and Padilla Hybrid or Achilles around (got a 5'er of each on CBID for $7 and $11 respectively).

Good review Jerry!

Re: Really cheap cigar review

I got a cigars-and-humidor offer in e-mail this week (I believe it was from Cigar.com). The cigars were Cremosas, probably the most reviled cigars on this board.

I keep seeing the Cremosa Cubana in the CI catalogs, and I've always wondered if those are the same thing as the dread Cremosas?

Re: Really cheap cigar review

Well since I am a high school student I am always looking for cheaper cigars.

I love the Flor De Olivas for their price they are awesome.

-Robusto Deluxe cigars are great for 1.50 each at my B&W.
-Jm's are good
-Brocatus cigars are awesome got like 25 of em for 34 bucks
Just ordered CI's "Mistakes" hoping those are good

I also like the Don Tomas clasico cigars (forgot how much those are)

I really reccommend the Brocatus cigars though. (check them out on CI)

Flor de Oliva is a very good budget smoke. I have wondered about the Brocatus - but CI has a way of making the worst dog rockets on the planet sound like terrific smokes.

It's called "marketing" and one mans dog rocket is another mans treasure as has been said. In the old days they called people who tried to sell things that weren't really what it seemed as "snake oil" and cigar salesman aren't above this. I have tried enough of CI's cigars that were inexpensive and the majority of them in my opinion are not all that good.

If you don't have the quality tobacco leaf and good wrapper which accounts for about 10% of the taste then you are not going to have a very good cigar. If the rollers themselves are not a top grade roller ( a 7 is considered a top roller ) and they are rolling the cigars then you have a recipe for a bad overall taste. A cigar is not just a cigar but rather it is a combination of different qualities and you can certainly tell the difference by taste.

No problem. And thanks for reading. One major point I was trying to get across , but not sure if I did, was that the ash was strong and stayed with the cigars.
You dont know how many shirts look worm eaten that I have because of burn holes. It almost looks like I got fragged with shrapnel. LOL
I have been to places, where signifigant others have gotten upset at their men, because of the ash burning a hole in their"good clothes"
Retired military, are generally very poor economically if that is their only source of income with s.s.
I went into reserved at certain point, and got a major law enfocement retirement that is quite lucrative.
So, if you need a cigar, to stop any marital arguments on the ash burning a hole in their pants and shirts and wallets, this is a good choice.
You will find that as you age(Mentally I feel like I am 17), you will find other things come into play into your life that you will never imagine.
My children think everything is replaceable. I tell them to maintain their stuff, so it will last, and they just think, I have a job, I will just buy a new one. Its todays young mentality, and disposable mentality.
Not for everyone, but for a lot of young folks. Sometimes lessons from a father do not catch on till later in life.
I myself have turned into my Dad, who has been gone for over twenty years. I miss him a lot(He was a marine aviator in ww2 in the south pacific, thus vmb moniker to honor him)(vmb = marine bombing squadron) but I hear myself speaking loudly sometimes and I look around thinking my father is their, and realize its me whos speaking. Its funny.
If I ever became half the man my dad was, I would be truley thankfull.
Well here I am rambling once again. Its my nature, and sorry to all you multiple paragraph haters.
And to any people of the Jewish faith. , I understand you just had some holidays. So happy holiday, or enjoy your holiday. Not sure what to say.

The greatest chaplain I ever knew was a Jewish Chaplain. He was the bravest, most genorous, smartest, kindest, and physically toughest and best poker play I have ever known. In the military any chaplain, can do any religian in a pinch.
I have seen r.c. priest(chaplains) perform seders, and rabbis(chaplains) perform last rites. They were the greatest and along with the medics(a lot of whom were consciontious objectors) were the bravest men in battle I ever saw. But thats for another time.

Much regards Jerry
