Joya de Nicaragua Antaņo 1970 Robusto

Finally bit the bullet on this and tried out the (in)famous JdN. Can't tell you how many people have told me to watch out for this cigar, it will kick your ass, etc. I've been in Tatuaje and Don Pepin country for some time now so I figured what did I have to lose?

5.5 x 52 isn't exactly what I'd call a robusto, I had to look up the vitola to make sure I didn't call it a corona gorda or whatever. It was a very pretty stick, I should have taken pictures. Dark, oily wrapper, one prominent vein but it looked very appetizing.

Lighting took several matches as both of my lighters are out of butane. Draws well and I can get a lot of smoke out of this.

Flavors, well, this is where I was stumped. It's definitely "full-bodied" but I didn't find it to be a particularly amazing blend of taste. I was really hoping for a spicy cigar to top off my night after a nice big steak, but I didn't get anywhere near the spice I was expecting. Smoke was heavy on the palate but I didn't pick out any robust, sharp, strong flavors like I had hoped.

A sure dose of vitamin N by the time I'd finished, though...I wasn't feeling green but you can definitely feel a little sluggish in the forehead or something. But I went about my business for the rest of the night and was just fine.

Overall this particular example seemed to be heavy on the nicotine and body rather than on flavor. I picked it up at my B&M earlier in the week so PERHAPS (big if) it was too humidified and this contributed to the indistinct flavors. I would like to try one that I'd properly dry-boxed and see if that makes a difference.

Not a bad smoke, but after all of the hype, I was really expecting a monster.

Probably a good idea to go with this size as the bigger sizes would probably make you feel a bit woozy after about 2 hours of puffing. You won't get the spicy pepper from this stick but it is a good cigar that gives you some complexity with it. I smoked the Churchill not long ago and felt the effects of it and was enjoyable. I smoke these about once a month as that is about all I can do as this isn't a cigar I crave all that often.

Yeah, it struck me as a cigar that one would want to just relax and "zone out" with, rather than one that you'd smoke for intense flavors.

Strongest smoke I've had so far. You can feel it right from the start, but it's nice right before bed! Not one I go for a lot when reaching in my coolidor though.

They're great little smokes and I've always got at least 3 boxes in my coolers. The robusto is a sweet little cigar that has some whallop to it, but it isn't anything near an LFD double ligero as far as oomph goes.

I love these, I would suggest getting another one and let it sit for a couple of months.

I totally agree with you, I was expecting something a lot more for a full bodied cigar, It really did not knock me out, I enjoyed the LFD DL a lot better

People expect these to be "spicy" but I've been through half a box of the Gran Perfectos and just started into a box of the Gran Consul and I've yet to have one that I would call "spicy".

To be honest my flavor description of these was almost identical to CA's, - It's packed with black cherry, roasted wood, coffee and leather notes with a woody finish. I usually feel like their descriptions are far fetched and pretentious but I couldnt agree more with this one.
