Reyes Family Premier

-Reyes Family Premier-

Another one from Frank, this is one of the family's new lines in an effort to re-brand. The Premier comes in 5 size: corona, robusto, toro, perfecto, and a 6x60 monster called the 'gordo'. These come with an Ecuador Sumatra Maduro wrapper, and Nicaraguan binder/filler. This was Carlos' (Rolando's Grandson) first blend once he was given control of the company.

The Review

Stats:
L/RG- 5x56
Size- Perfecto
Price- $9.40 (On Famous)
Smoke Date- 9/24/09
Smoke Time- 10:40 AM to 11:45 AM

Appearance/Presentation: 16/20
Maybe I'm just a sucker for Perfectos, but this one looked really good. Smooth maduro wrapper with few veins. It has a nice looking label with a really sharp new logo. The wrapper had a nice deep brown color to it and was pretty oily.

Construction: 27/30
The construction was really good on this one. It felt firm and densely packed, it was like a little tank. It had some give to the touch, but no soft or hard spots and a general consistent construction. It was already cut, which I'm not sure if that's a result of rollers not applying any attention to the cap, or just cutting it in the factory but either way the pre-cut didn't affect construction one bit, it stayed very well together throughout. Wrapper didn't have any imperfections or inconsistencies. The draw was borderline tight, but it didn't seem to affect the smoke because I still got tons of white smoke throughout the duration of the cigar.

Lighting and Burning: 14/15
The light went well, which is usually a given on a perfecto. The burn was impressively even, it really stayed straight throughout. Like I mentioned earlier, there was tons of smoke and it was nice and aromatic with a very good smell. No re-light, and it burned fairly quick.

Taste: 28/35
Upon Lighting it had a woodsy dry almost spicy flavor that I'd associate with Ecuadorian wrappers. There was a mellow, general tobacco flavor throughout that neither excited nor dissapointed me.

Once It got going, about an inch in, I started to get some nice sweet tea-like notes that were pleasant. About half way some nice chocolatey flavors showed up but they unfortunately disappeared after maybe 1/2 inch. In General I can't honestly say anything bad about the flavors, but at the same time I didn't get anything that excited me either.

Just a mellow tobacco taste, and every time some sort of interesting flavors showed up, they quickly disappeared.

Overall Impression:
This was by no means a bad cigar, but I was really expecting a powerhouse with alot of flavors. The construction was definitely above average and it smoked well. Flavors were mellow and very smooth, but there was not a whole not going on. I would call it medium bodied. I plan to pick up a few more of these, maybe in a smaller size like the corona and see if there are some more pronounced flavors. The price point of the smaller sizes like the robusto and corona is more around $4 so at that price I’d recommend picking one up.

Final Score: 85/100

Re: Reyes Family Premier

I have been a convert of the Reyes branding in the last few months. I bought a box last year and let them rest and I gotta tell you they were really good. Some cigars are good right out of the gate but some of the Reyes cigars just get better with age. I haven't had this particular one yet but will try it and then let some sit and try again.
