Fuente Fuente Opus X

First of all let me preface this by saying that this is probably a once in a lifetime oppurtunity for me. This cigar was given to me by a good friend here on this forum. I will leave him nameless unsless he chooses to chime in.

Here it is

Cigar- Fuente Fuente Opus X ( 5 5/8 x 46)
Cutter- Mean Sardine
Lighter- Ronson Jet Lite
Drink- Coke Zero

Pre Light- This cigar is beautiful. The band is gorgeous, the construction is flawless. The cigar smells like pure tobacco with just a hint of sweetness. The foot has a slight barnyard smell. Pre light draw produces a unigue taste. It has a lot of sweetness to it.

Initial Light- The first draw taste exactly what I imagined it would. Lots of sweet pure tobacco flavor. The draw is nice, offering the perfect amount of resistence.

1st Third- The burn of the cigar is a little even from the get go. I had to recorrect almost immediatley. The flavor is at this point is pure tobacco. It has a strong earthy finish that is easily recognizable. About a half inch in the cigar begins to pick up in flavor. There is still the natural sweetness there (which I love) but there is a good amount of black pepper that lingers on the bcak of the palet. The burn is still uneven but not so much I can't deal with it. As I approach the 3/4 inch mark I get a blast of what I would describe as floral. The finish is still earthy with a bit of pepper still lingering. The smoke is very heavy and seems to coat the palet. As I approach the inch mark the flavors change again, there is a hint of clove with some spice. The finish has developed into what I can only describe a slight mushroom flavor. It is earthy but not dirt earthy. The burn is a little off again. As I aproach the second third the cigar begins to mellow out a little.

2nd Third- As I begin to venture into the second third the cigar as mentioned before has mellowed out. There is a hint of cedar with each puff. The ash falls off at around the 1 3/4 inch mark. That may be do to the fact that I have had to correct the burn several times. I have to say I am amazed at the smoothness of this cigar. The floral notes are beginning to sneak back in now. When I nasal exhale I catch just the faintest hint of leather. The amount of smoke is really picking up now. The smoke coats the mouth in a way I've never experienced. It almost has a numbing feeling to it. (does that sound crazy?) As get a little more than halfwat through it the stick begins to pick back up again. The pepper once again hits the back of my palet. And the earthiness is back. Approaching the final third the cigar becomes a little on the bitter side.

Final third- I begin the final third with a quick purge as the bitterness has become a negative now. The cigar quickly returns to its glory. The pepper has mellowed back out now and is all but gone for the moment. The nose exhale leaves hints of leather on the palet again. I begin to get charred flavor ( in a good way) that I tend to pick up at this point with most full bodied cigars. With a little less than two inches left the pepper is back. And by back I mean BACK. I can even feel it in my nostrils on the finish. The burn issues continue, as I have had to fix it atleast four times. At around an inch and ahalf I have to relight. As I approach the final stretch the pepper is gone again and the sweetness sneaks back in.

The final stretch- The cigar is back to where it started. Floral with a little sweet and a little pepper. At a little less than i lay it down.

Overall- This was a really good stick. It was complex with a lot of enjoyable and unique flavors. It is a cigar that I am glad I had the experience of trying. I would def smoke another one, but I don't think I would pay the prices that I have seen them go for. At 5 bucks it's a steal, at 7.50 a good buy. I'd probably pay ten for it occassionialy, but anything past that give me a Gurkah Nepalese Warrior. The burn issues were a real negative for me. Huge thanks go out to the BOTL who shared this stick with me.

Let me know what you think

I really have no clue about the age. The cellophane was still really clear. No yellowing at all.

Re: Fuente Fuente Opus X

Hey Fiddla.

I'm gonna say it took about an hour and fifteen. That being said I am a slow smoker so for the average person probably around an hour.

And yes it was a GREAT way to start the vacation. I have 5 more nights of super premium sticks left.

Great review T.W.! I love Opus-X's, maybe it was a little over-humidified??? Never had any problems with them before.

Re: Fuente Fuente Opus X

It is very possible that it could have been a little ove humidified. I was using a travel humidor with a credo humidification unit. It had been in there probably 36 hours or so.

On a side note, while visiting The Tinder Box here in Myrtle Beach they had quite some and at MSPR. The had they torpedo for $12.95 and the tins for $ 50. I almost pulled the trigger, but decided to get a few other ones instead.

For me it is not worth it, but don't get me wrong it is a great smoke. I think maybe I was expecting the Holy Grail of cigars. Maybe I had my expectations sat way too high.
