Felipe Gregorio Poor Boy

Felipe Gregorio Poor Boy

Another one that Anime sent me to try, the Poor Boy is a somewhat new cigar from Felipe Gregorio. They are the only FG cigar to be rolled in Miami and they are all rolled by Cuban rollers. The Poor Boy comes in a Connecticut shade or Maduro wrapper, and is available in 5 sizes. The one you’ll read about was a Conn. Shade wrapper, with Dominican and Honduran fillers. The marketing on these claims that they are “The closest you can get to a Cuban cigar”… we’ll see about that.

Stats:
Brand- FG Poor Boy
L/RG- 6x54
Size- Torpedo
Price- $4-$5
Smoke Date- 10/1/09
Smoke Time- 10:35 AM – 11:30 AM

Appearance/Presentation: 17/20
When you look at this cigar the first thing you think is CAO Vision. I’m sure the intention wasn’t to copy the Vision, but they look almost identical. Either way it’s a sharp looking double label. The wrapper was very smooth and seamless, with the slightest veins. Overall I’d say it looked pretty sexy with the white labels and smooth wrapper.

Construction: 28/30
The Poor Boy felt rock solid with no soft or hard spots. The wrapper was flawless and looked very well applied. It felt like it was densely packed, but at the same time it felt lighter than it looked. The draw was just about perfect, not too tight or loose but right in the sweet-spot.

Lighting/Burning: 13/15
The light went well with my Ronson jet-light. It burnt quickly considering that it was 6x54 and only smoked for about an hour. The burn was consistently even throughout, it never really went astray it just stayed nice and straight. Also I didn’t have to re-light.

Taste: 28/35
Upon lighting I got the typical boring Connecticut shade taste and I really thought I’d be in for a boring smoke. But at about 1” some spice came into the picture all over the palate and at about 2” a nice creamy flavor developed.

It was almost like the taste of coffee creamer just a nice smooth creamy taste that balanced out the spice. The finish was short and had an earthy sweet flavor. Throughout the spice and cream went back and forth often showing up at the same time and balancing out well.

Overall Impressions:
For the price this really wasn’t a bad cigar, but its NOWHERE near a cuban what so ever. I expected it to be boring in all honesty but it really did have a nice complexity of flavors that I thoroughly enjoyed. It would make an outstanding cigar for someone who wants a nice mild morning smoke but also wants to enjoy some nice flavors as well. Overall I’d recommend giving this a try because you can find them for under $3 online and because it has great potential as a go-to morning smoke.

Final Score: 85/100

nice review, and just the review I was looking for. Im planning on heading down to his Miami factory/store and this is one of the sticks of his I was very curious about and will definitely pick up one of each of the two wrapper types.
Thanks for the review!

Wow, I also smoked one of these today! I liked it a little more than you did.

Not that I disliked it, but I liked it just as a nice go-to morning smoke.

Re: Felipe Gregorio Poor Boy

Good solid review here Dom. I have smoked quite a few of the FG line of cigars except for this one and wished that it was on the maduro wrapper since that is my favorite wrapper. How long was this cigar stored before you actually smoked it? I like to see how a cigar develops with some age to it before I really consider it's attributes. Cigars that are too fresh don't give me a real honest taste. I do like the profile you found on this and will probably try to score a 5 pak and test it in monthly increments as far as taste.

The age is kind of a question mark for me.

I got this from FG's marketing director to review so I don't know how long since it was rolled, the only definitive thing I can say is that I let it sit in my humi for a week to get it into smoking shape.

That being said I'm assuming it's fairly young considering that I'm sure they dont keep a ton of aged cigars around the factory.

The best Poor Boy I have had was right off the shelf at their store, weird.

Good to know so it looks like my next order will include this cigar. I really like the creaminess to a cigar along with the spice you talked about. Those are my favorite tastes.
