La Aurora Preferidos Sumatra: an abridged review

Hey guys, I just wanted to share a few quick notes about the smoke that I had the other night.

Cigar: La Aurora Preferidos Emerald (Sumatra)
Age: Not sure, was given to me.
Dedication: Thank you Smelvis/Dave for this fantastic smoke!

Prelight: I snipped this stick to about a 1/4 inch in, maybe a tiny bit more. The draw was tight (to be expected with this shape), and had an intriguing, dark, woody-taste to it. It tasted mature. The construction was beyond flawless and I could tell that this would be a great cigar.

Light and first 1/3rd:
Lit up like a beauty, and immediately my palate was whet with a light, pine, almost cologne taste. It reminded me somehow of Polo cologne in its spicy pine-taste. This flavor really tasted like something new and special that I never had before.

The flavor was getting stronger and deeper, more complex, very subtly, the further I smoked. It took about 30-35 minutes to make a dent in this stout smoke, which surprised the crap out of me.

Middle:
This cigar really crept up on me, and finally hit the middle at about 1 hour 15 minutes. It was a very complex succession of subtleties; piney-wood, dark moist earth, coffee, oak; really eventful and almost overwhelming to my noobish tastebuds! I just didn't quite know how to handle it!

Final third: I didn't want to put this down, as it really had been a great adventure. The smoke got a bit harsh at this point, so I started with a quick purge to get things started. Immediately it was apparent that it was a very full-bodied smoke for me. The woodsy, moist earth, remained along with a little bit of an espresso taste. At almost 2 and a half hours, it was time to lay it down and say goodnight.

Conclusions:
This is a smoke meant for us cigar-nuts. I would recommend setting aside at least 2 hours for it, however. It was really a leap above anything I've smoked thus far in terms of quality and complexity, and I almost did not feel worthy of smoking such a masterpiece! Almost. hehe.

I never got much of any creaminess out of this cigar. I think it was a good thing, though, and it was definitely a great learning experience for me.

Not a smoke I'd ever hand out to average-Joe smokers. Definitely a cigar meant for a true cigar-lover (like me and you!) that I personally don't think any other type of person would truly appreciate. I really don't mean to sound snobby, but I'll save my bundle-smokes for 'the guys' and keep these for myself.

Thanks again, Dave. I cannot wait to try the others!

Cheers,
Isaac

Whoops maybe this wasn't a 'short review' but for a smoke that provided me with that much time, I think it's ok.

Thanks for the great review Isaac. It's mind-boggling to see such short perfecto burn for so long. I still remember the cammie preferido I smoked lasted about 2 and half hours as well.

Yeah J, I thought I was losing it or something! Never ever had something burn so slow! La Aurora must really have some of the best rollers in the world. I think there's a DPG or RP that they roll too; I forget which one though.
