My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

Well I have been salivating over three brands I have not tried before. The fuente short story, the alec bradley tempus, and a la gloria cubana r series.

I went to my local b and m, and purchased the three. The short story and the other 2 in about a churchill sized. 33 dollars for the 3. Expensive here in new york at retail.

I stuck them all in the cigar caddy, except for the short story as I couldnt wait to light it up. I was in yonkers new york, so I drove to the nearest park, that had a bench.

Now stupid me, the first think I did was clip the wrong end. I clipped (I was using an acu clip) that little tied off end, in which only about and 1/16 of an inch was clipped. I thought I would need to clip it about 3 more times, but I realized right off that I had clipped the wrong side. But no damage done.

I am not used to these little sucker. I had to check the band to make sure I had it right. LOL

So I clip the correct side and start to toast that pointy end. I gave it a little longer then ususal, because it seemed to not have much tobacco at the end and needed to catch on a bit better.

Well I put it to my mouth and gave it another second of flame, and I was very disappointed. The draw was horriblem like sucking through a thick shake straw.
After about three puffs, I took out my trusty punch, and tried to get it in the center as not to destroy the wrapper.

I made a nice little plug hole, and the cigar draw was instantly twice as easy, and improved as I smoked to, to become a perfect draw one third down.

The cigar was cute and seemed well made, and I could taste the quality smooth tobacco, but didnt think too much of this cigar, especially in relationship to what it cost. Even at auction, I think this cigar was overpriced.

It had hints of cream and cedar that got stronger as the shaft burned downed, with a bit of strong tobacco that sat all over the tongue and aroung your upper pallette and your mouth. I felt probably more like a cigarette.

The smoke was volumnous and nice, the burn perfect, I smoked it till I couldnt hold it anymore.

This smoke lasted 20 minutes and was unsatisfying to me. I didnt even feel like I had my cigar smoke. This was the first time in my life I have actually lit up and smoked a second cigar after smoking one.

I picked up a romeo and julieta half corona(which I am trying to get rid of the rest) and thought comparitively the r and J, was a much better smoke, and a better value, and I am not thrilled with them.

I know the hemingways are very popular on this forum, but this is just my view. I will try another one of this selection in a bigger size and see how that goes. Great potential, but little to show.

I wonder if this cigar was a thompson relabel that said flor de thompson or something like that, what the reviews would be , if given out for free to try?

Thats all I have to say on this matter.

Much regards Jerry

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

I would suggest giving the hemingway another try but try the Work of art, or the classic or signature heminways. the short story is the smallest of these and is a small smoke

to light these, I usually dont clip the foot but fire it up and hit the small area around the tip to get it going.
it will take a few puffs to really fire up as the area is so small
i enjoy all the hemingways, the draw and burn is usually very good and if you run into maduros in any of these, you are in for a treat if you like maduro/ give them another try in a different size my .02

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

I like the short story but can't say I think it's price matches it's appeal to me. The only other smoke in this category I've tried is the Camacho SLR Maduro. Different smokes but I may like it better. Love to hear about anything else similar.

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

Sorry to hear that bro. For me there's something magical about short stories, and really enjoy them. I really think you should get another one and leave it in the humidor for a month or so and light it up again....
But if you choose not to, i suggest you still give some of the other Hemingways a try!

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

I think that you might have smoked it too fast and got it too hot...This is common with this little beauty...I usually take almost 45 min to smoke my Short Stories...The flavors get lost when it is smoked fast...Plus you didnt let it rest in your humidor for awhile before smoking...This might have had something to do with the draw, maybey...Good review though Jerry...

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

Thanks for the review, Jerry, another good and interesting post.

Coincidentally, I picked up a couple of these 2-3 days ago. I don't typically smoke many Fuente's but have kind of become infatuated with the shape, after several RyJ's Love Stories. I haven't smoked them yet, but am hoping they'll bring a little variety when I'm hungry for what I call a "perfecto" fix.

good job,

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

I've smoked a handful of these, and I really like them. I usually get right around 45 minutes out of one, but I'm slow. I've considered buying a box of them, but I'd like to try the Signature size first. They cost a lot more, but I think it's a better size for me personally. I hate going downtown, but I have to go run some other errands anyway, so I'm going to brave it in a little while and hit the B&M there and see if they have any. They carry a lot more Fuente products than anyone else in town, so I'm hopeful.

Re: My review of an A. Fuente Hemingway short story

Interesting... I tried one (one of my first 4 or 5 cigars), and I didn't enjoy it... but I have another sitting in the humi...

Since I was a noob, I may have smoked it to fast, and it got too ho. I've learned over the past 6 weeks, to slow down, and relax and let the cigar take it's time... (good advice picked up from this thread as a noob)...

Will give it one more chance...

Thanks for you review and thought Jerry!

I feel the same way you do, I'm just not a fan of damn near all Fuente cigars....except the Casa Fuente!
