Nestor Reserve Maduro

This week's cigar is the Nestor Reserve Maduro. I don't know a lot about this stick, just picked them up for $7 for a five pack as a second purchase on Cbid.

Cigar- Nestor Reserve Maduro Torpedo (6 1/2x54)
Cutter- Double Blade Cheapo
Lighter -Ronson Jet Lite
Drink- Coke Zero

Pre Light- This is a great looking stick. The box press is perfect, the construction seems solid. The wrapper is DARK, so dark I woder if it is dyed. How do I tell? Pre Light draw gives the right amount of resistence, and there is a little tingle on the lips. There is a faint taste of sweet tobacco.

Initial Light- Lots of smoke from the get go. The best way I can describe the flavor is wet earthiness. Not really grassy, but you get a hint of some green flavors. There is a mild coffee taste on the finish.

1st Third- I'm about a half inch into the stick, the flavors are the same as the beginning, earthiness and a little coffee. About half way through the first third the burn is terrible, although this could be my fault as they are fresh off the UPS truck. There is a taste of Cocoa starting to slip into the mix. The nose exhale is a lil harsh with a blast of earthiness. Approaching the second third there is a bit of pepper on the back of the throat.

2nd Third- I start the second third, by doing something I've done at least 5 times now. Fix the burn. The cocoa is there more now, but there is also a bit of metalic taste left with it, but not enough to ruin the rest of the flavors. The cocoa fades and the earthiness is back. What has suprised me the most is the lack of sweetness that I usually get with the maduro wrapper. Maybe this is another sign of the dyed wrappper. The burn has settled out just a bit now, hopefully it will stay that way. Oops, spoke too soon, the burn is bak to terrible. But there is a nice shot of bitter sweet cocoa that comes through.

Final Third- At this point I am convinced that the wrapper is dyed. I guess it's not a bad thing, but there is someting about it that pisses me off. Back to flavor.... it is pretty much the same as earthy flavor. With about an inch and a half left the metalic taste is back, and pretty strong now.

The Final Stretch- I take a final draw at the inch mark, and decide it's not worth the metalic taste and put it down.

Overall- I think that for $7 bucks/5 they are ok. I think anything more than that and there are better deals out there. It was a decent stick, but like I said before there is something about the dyed wrapper that just seems wrong. I will let the rest of them rest for a while and revisit.

Let's hear your thoughts.

Re: Nestor Reserve Maduro

I agree with your dyed wrapper thoughts. That spells immediate disqualification in my book.
