Hey all you cigar smokers out there,
I now have a review page sponsored by TCS with all my reviews on it. It has a more readable format and also gives you the option of joinig my review mailing list. You can check it out by clicking here. I always appreciate feedback. -Skyler Montecristo Platinum Robusto Chewing the Leather To be fair, I should say that I was a bit skeptical of this cigar going in. Montecristo seems to be coming out with too many different lines that just taste oddly similar to me. It may be a great marketing strategy, but is it really worth it? Sadly, my expectations proved mostly right on this one. On looking at this cigar, it had a slight shine to it, but also had some strange cosmetic construction. It was not very smooth to the touch and the veins seemed to be leading in many directions. The pre-lit smell was common Montecristo: plain tobacco leaf in a Natural wrapper. The one thing I did note as a plus was that it seemed to be a very firm cigar. My punch did not go in easily, but the cap held up very well. It lit very well and easily and had an immediate flavor or leather with a hint of pepper. The amount of smoke produced was nice and the draw was exceptional proving that the external construction did not reflect the internal. After the first ten good puffs, it settled into a mellow leathery flavor with hints of peppery spice. After my first ash at about an inch, my notes ended. The flavor did not really change except to become slightly spicier as it burned down due to the heat. There was little complexity to this cigar, but it was very consistent in its burn, draw, and flavor. A strong point I did note for those wine drinkers out there is that it seemed to have a somewhat bitter and dry taste. This led me to believe that it might be complimented very well by a nice glass of Pinot Noir (an exceptional and earthy red) or Shiraz (also red, but with more spice to it). Both wines have a dry and bitter flavor due to the tannic content and both have been described as having a smoky flavor to them. It seemed to me that the combination might work well enough to justify the price of both. Alas, if you are not a wine-drinker, I do not know that anything would make this cigar worth its $7.00 price tag. Would I recommend this cigar to my customers? I would have to say no. I have always been a fan of the Montecristo line of cigars, but I think even with the regular line, you are better off since you at least know what you are in for. With the Platinum line, I think that it is just a gimmick to get more smokers interested in the Montecristo brand, itself. Stick to what you know and pick up a regular Montecristo instead. Overall Rating- B-
