Joya de Nicaragua Antono 1970 Machito Review

I have just come back inside from smoking a JdN. this cigar packs quite a bit of punch and it was a bit too strong for my liking however it was enjoyable, nice flavours, very leathery i thought, and also quite spicey, lasted a surprisingly long time, about an hour. had a few burn problems with it, about an inch of ash formed and it started to go out, i ashed it and it left a small cone which i thought was fine but then it started to tunnel and i could feel it getting hot behind the burn line, i touched up the edges and managed to sort this with a few gentle purges and then it was ok. about 2/3 of the way down and it started to burn a little hot and then the full punch kicked in and gave me a little headache (lol) but I continued on and had a few very tasty puffs towards the end. As usual i disected the remains of the cigar after i had finished and found a small hard-packed bit of tobacco near the nub so i think this may explain the burn probs.

all in all an enjoyable smoke, too strong for my usual rotation but good for keeping when i really fancy a kick in the balls! with it i drank a cool glass of blackcurrant cordial, but i think in future a glass of wine would be better, maybe a chilled pinot grigio to cut through the flavour.

mmmmm, machitos! I really like this cigar, and most of its brothers. The machito certainly packs a punch, but I find it rather enjoyable. I prefer the gran consul and robusto grande, but the machito is great for when you just want an in-your-face nicotine bomb.

Great review!

I think i would enjoy it more if i was used to strong cigars, i am more of a mild man myself.

Very nice review...I fancy myself a Consul man.

It's fun to keep something around for when you need a "kick in the balls."

Ah yes you nailed it on the review. You aren't the first to get that kick in the head from it . I agree on the drink selection as well. Whenever I have something that is either strong or spicy I prefer the sweetness of wine (for me a Tawny Port, porto, or even cheap sangria). I noticed the same on the burn problems before. It probably could have used a bit of drying out as the bottom of my humi stays at a solid 70 rh. I've been forcing myself to store at as close to 70 for a few months so that when I cut over to 65 I will truly be able to determine for myself which I like better for storing. It is funny how some sticks seem to burn fine at 70 yet others don't. Good review.

I've finally gotten in my Lfd Double Ligero Chisels. With all the talk of strength.... Now I'm afraid to smoke it (after knowing how this one can bust up a pair of balls).

If you like mild I think the CAO cameroon way definitely suit you better. Cameroon wrappes to me are the ultimate in mildness.

Ok i will bear that in mind, if i had know about the JdN then i probably wouldnt have smoked it when i did, id have gone for a milder one but what the hell, you never know until you try. Im looking forward to the CAO, and the Rocky Patel is also very appealing. What about the Don Lino, is that strong or not?

Enjoy your chisels, i hope the damage from that kick in the balls isnt permanent!!!

BTW Im still a bit high from the Nicotine hit, and its now 5 hours later!

Do you often "fancy a kick in the balls?" That's strange enough, but a kick in the balls paired with blackcurrant cordial is just plain f#$^ed up! And no, I don't think pairing chilled pino grigio with it is any less strange!

Glad you enjoyed the smoke. Thanks for the review.

Great review. I love these cigars and smoke them almost daily. I miss the days when these would give me a head rush... Now I'd probably have to eat one to feel any affects

FWIW - I don't consider the chisels to have anywhere near the strength of the JdN. I really like the LfD's, but to me they aren't nearly as powerful. They are a very well balanced, well constructed smoke!

I just had one of these the other night. Went into it fully prepared with a nice cold beverage. Still got a nice little buzz by the time I was done. Definitely not something for an every day smoke!

Thanks for the review. These are great smokes when I find myself short on time but looking for something big in flavor and don't want to touch any more of my BCJ or Shorts, this is a perfect smoke.
