Review - Thompson's Manolette - 7 - Toro

DATE: 2006/06/24
REVIEWER: Timothy "Texan_To_The_End" Piper
CIGAR: Thompson's Manolette
SIZE: 6.0 X 52
ORIGIN: Nicaraguan (?)
WRAPPER: Ecuadoran (?)
BINDER: Dominican (?)
FILLER: Braz, Nic. (?)
SHAPE: Toro
AGE: Unknown. In my humidor sonce 2006/06/06
VENDOR: Gifted by RHarris. (Thanks again!)
PRICE: Unknown. Current retail is US $2.28 each.

AMBIENCE:
8:00PM Saturday evening. Warm but relatively low humidity this evening. No rain in sight now.

BEVERAGE:
Coffee - black.

APPEARANCE:
A smooth putty-brown Conn-wrapper on this very heavy stick. General feel and construction reminds me of an Ovation.

PRE_LIGHT:
No discernable odor or taste.

DRAW:
Excellent draw. I'd have thought as heavy as this stick was it would be a tighter draw.

FIRST_THIRD:
Typical Conn taste to the wrapper at first (Sort of metallic & bitter) but it soon turned sweet and grassy. Hmm... Odd as it may seem, this actually tastes pretty good.

SECOND_THIRD:
Rather one-dimensional, but the sweet grassy and hay flavors finally took on a little creamy texture. A pleasant cigar to smoke.

FINAL_THIRD:
Even though this was another delicate wrapper, the cigar didn't get even the tiniest bit of cracking in it. My compliments to the roller. It did turn a little bit harsh in the last two inches.

BURN:
Very good burn.

ASH:
Very white solid firm ash.

SMOKE:
Lots & lots of very sweet tasting smoke.

STRENGTH:
Mild.

FLAVOUR:
Sweet grass and hay flavors.

FINISH:
Didn't last long, maybe five minutes.

SMOKE_TIME:
70 minutes total; left about an inch and a half unsmoked.

IMPRESSION:
Flavor-Taste profile is very similar the the Por Larranaga; just not quite there.

RATING:
7 out of a possible TEN wooden matchsticks.

COMMENTS:
This is a good cigar, which was a surprise to me.

Nice review - I like the format.

Never tried a Thompson but have heard mixed reviews.

I have a dozen more Thompson's house brands for review. I'll get to them this month. If you trust my taste to be similar enough to yours, you might want to wait to see how the reviews turn out.

Thanks!

Hmm...this may be a good cheap drunk cigar then???

BTW- I like the new format. Much better with the spacing and bold headers!

Yeah, they're acceptable. But bear in mind for about the same price you can get an equal amount of Famous 3000's, which are much better.

Thanks!

True. I still haven't smoked a 3000 yet. I have one sitting in my humi....received it from Svillekid on a bead trade.

Re: Review - Thompson's Manolette - 7 - Toro

I have smoked the Thompsons Manolete and found it to be a good smoke, it is one of the few Thompson's brands that are any good IMO. Another is their Tusker brand.
