Review - Gran Habanos (Blend #5) Corojo - 8 - Robusto

DATE: 2006/06/25
REVIEWER: Timothy "Texan_To_The_End" Piper
CIGAR: Gran Habanos (Blend #5) Corojo
SIZE: 4.50 X 50
ORIGIN: Danli, Honduras
WRAPPER: Nicaraguan (Colorado Claro)
BINDER: Costa Rican
FILLER: Nicaraguan
SHAPE: Robusto (Named Rothchild)
AGE: In my humidor since 2006/05/05.
VENDOR: Local B&M
PRICE: Current retail is US $3.85 each.

AMBIENCE:
10AM Sunday morning. Sunny and hot with rather low humidity. A beautiful day.

BEVERAGE:
Coffee - black.

APPEARANCE:
An extremely stiff cigar. Smooth brown semi-oily wrapper, very well constructed cigar.

PRE_LIGHT:
Pretty much zero taste but had a nice woody scent to it.

DRAW:
Totally plugged. It was even difficult getting my skewer through the tobacco.

FIRST_THIRD:
I don't know how, but the draw turned perfect almost immediately upon lighting this cigar. The first few puffs were harsh & bitter, but it very quickly smoothed out. Became a wood and cream duet that politely took turns at the forefront. Every other puff it seemed to switch between the two as a dominant taste.

SECOND_THIRD:
The woody flavor diminished a bit and a sweet type of hay taste became apparent. These flavors blended and mixed quite well with each other.

FINAL_THIRD:
Stayed pretty much the same til the nub, with the addition of a peppery-spicy taste in the last inch and a half.

BURN:
Had to do one minor touch-up halfway through the stick.

ASH:
Strangest ash I've ever seen. Light grey flakey ash made up the body, and the wrapper ash turned into a dull-silver colored smooth ash around that. It was easy to use a toothpick to separate these layers. I've never seen this before.

SMOKE:
Not a large volume of smoke, but sweet and woody.

STRENGTH:
Medium.

FLAVOUR:
Creamy base tone with wood and hay tastes on top.

FINISH:
The cream and hay lingered for a good fifteen minutes.

SMOKE_TIME:
One hour and five minutes.

IMPRESSION:
A very nice cigar. Several more of these are in my humidor and I think they need to rest up for some time. Even though this cigar was very good, I can't help but think it will only get better with age.

RATING:
8 out of a possible TEN wooden matchsticks.

COMMENTS:
This cigar was designed with coffee in mind I think. <G> It went very well with the cheap black coffee I brew.

I've had the #3 and it's a nice stick for the price.

smoking my first one right now and i love it!

maybe they are inconsistent from stick to stick, but mine has been putting out a massive amount of smoke. perfect draw. i noticed some floral overtones the first 1/3 of this cigar....even some chocolate taste. definately a good cigar!

i'm at about the 2/3 point, and it has a nice toasty flavor and aroma right now...

CA has them atop the churchill category this month with a 90. Not bad!

Thanks for another excellent review. I had one a couple of weeks ago and found it had an earthy barnyard and damp grass flavor. Tight draw with little smoke. Did not much enjoy it but based on your review and other posts this seems not to be typical. Planning on trying another soon.

If you want lots and lots of smoke, forget the robusto, try the Rothchild.

I'll second that one, great stick with lots of smoke. I've been smoking some lately and I love 'em. They never get harsh or peppery and taste great. The only problem that I have is that when I ash (which is half way thru, it has really tight ash) they like to go out on me and I have to relight. Thats about my only complaint.
