Noob Review: Cu-Avana Churchill

One of the pleasures of this hobby is sitting around with a bunch of friends and have a few drinks and few smokes. Some people want to try cigars but are intimidated by them. Therfore I wanted to try a light smoke to have at hand that will not lay people on their @$$. Enter the Cu-Avana churchill. I got a great deal on a box of these (about 1.25 a stick) and figured what the heck.

Setting: On the deck (where else?) around 8:30 PM. Temp was was 77*. Mild night.

Appearance: Good looking cigar. Had a very nice, oily, light brown, Conneticut shade wrapper with no veins. Nice firm feel to it.

1/3rd: Upon light up started getting a nice mellow toasty, nutty taste. The key word here is mild. Draw was very good; just right. Burn was very good. Smoke was ok, not too plentiful at first but did get better as it went on. Ash was also good and hanged on for about an inch, inch and a half.

2/3rd: More of the same as the above. A bit of pepper and/or spicyness started coming through. Still very mild. Burn continued to stay very even (surprised). A bit more smoke is produced. Towards the middle to end of thisn third a little grassiness started coming through. Again everything is mild.

3/3rd.: More of the above. A little stronger spiciness from time to time would come through. The nutty taste seems to have really mellowed out and overtaken by some grassiness. Burn was still excellent. Noticed that ash would hand on now only about an inch before falling off.

Final impression: Very mild and nothing complex about this cigar. You can have this cigar any time of the day and for some reason feel that would probably go well with some nice string coffee. It's strong points (at least this one) were the draw and burn which where excellent througout. The more I smoked I noticed that less ash would hang on. It produced some nice smoke but no where near my other reviews (The Torano Exodus and the CAO Gol).

Still feel that would be a nice cigar for someone who is just getting into smokes. You can generally pick these up cheap so even if the person does not like it it won't have cost you much. For the money it is nice buy but I would rate it below the 5 Vegas Gold line, which is another nice mild smoke.

Hope you guys enjoyed the review.

Stay strong and keep smoking.

Thanks for the review. Like you said, it seems like it may be a good stick to have on hand for others who aren't really into cigars too much. I just can't bring myself to smoke any mild conn shade sticks at all these days. There is too much other good stuff out there that packs at least a bit of flavor and punch.
