Review: 5 Vegas Gold "Robusto" - Smoking RIGHT NOW!

This is going to be a quick review...(Disclaimer: I'm a newbie)
I received this gar in a sampler pack from cbid.

Construction: Very Good.

Appearance: Smooth with some veins, I like that.

Burn: Even with white to light grey ash.

Draw: TOO LOOSE! I've never smoked a gar with no resistance. The smoke is overwhelming and it is ruining the taste and overall enjoyment of the cigar. (Any suggestions on how to better handle a cigar with such a loose draw?)

Taste: Best I can tell...peppery with cedar, but with soo much smoke it's hard to tell.

Recommendations: If you like a lot of smoke...this cigar is for you!

(Disclaimer: I'm a newbie)

In my experience, if a cigar burns too hot, too fast, or too loose -- or all three at the same time, which is likely--you should set it down for a good five minutes. Often, when you pick it back up again, you will find it smokes slower and has stronger flavors. BUT be careful not to let the cigar go completely out. Sometimes a cigar that goes out completely can be relit with no problem, but some cigars acquire a foul taste once they've been allowed to extinguish completely (an example of this is the Punch Rare Corojo, an excellent cigar but not a re-lightable one).

Re: Review: 5 Vegas Gold "Robusto" - Smoking RIGHT NOW!

i smoked a torpedo vegas gold tonight and loved it. i have had the robusto in the past and it does burn alittle fast you do have to lay it down for awhile. the torpedo on the other hand i did not. it was a very fine cigar that started out peppery and smoothed into a creamy sweet spice taste. not as good as a montecristo, but it is in the ballpark.

I usually smoke the torps, and I cut them pretty shallow so it helps the draw. These do put out a lot of smoke. I like em in the am with coffee...mmm good.

I had a Gold Nugget tonite and thoroughly enjoyed it. It's wasn't optimally humidified either...I almost couldn't punch it because it was too moist. It was the perfect 30 minute smoke...I prefer a full flavored cigar but the mellow Gold is perfect for work.

I keep these stocked for an AM w/coffee smoke. I stick with the Torpedo and cut closer to the tip for the same reasons mentioned above. I love a cigar with a ton of smoke but don't want it to feel like I'm sucking on a straw. Try cutting them closer to the end. For the robustos I'd use a punch.

This is currently my favorite cigar, but I am a brand-spanking newbie like you so what do I know?

I use a punch and have learned to smoke them s-l-o-w. On most of mine the draw is medium, could be I'm keeping them at higher humidity than you. I absolutely love all of the creamy smoke, I'm working on rings right now!

Don't give up on this stick immediately HonkyTonk. . . over tha last 10 years of herfing I've found that sometimes you get a couple that are not quite up to snuff - it doesn't mean the whole line is bad. Sounds like over despite the loose draw, that it was decent.

Nice quick review.

Question:
If the draw is too loose, wouldn't that indicate a construction problem with the cigar, and therefore lower the grade you gave to construction?
Since appearance would take care of veins, cap shape, etc.

Correct? or am I being picky. Just want noob's to nkow how to read reviews etc.

Re: Review: 5 Vegas Gold "Robusto" - Smoking RIGHT NOW!

I smoked my first one of these last night as they've been piling up due to various samplers coming in. I have to say that I really enjoyed it a lot. It's a mild cigar but still has a peppery kick. Construction was excellent providing a nice even burn. I used a cutter on the robusto and actually liked the easy draw. Maybe it's because I was smoking late at night but I appreciated not having to fight the cigar and I liked the fact that it stayed lit. I didn't find the smoke volume to be all that different from a typical cigar and it actually gave off very little smoke while resting.

All in all I'm pretty happy with the 5 Vegas Gold Robusto as a mild cigar and will probably add more to my humi if the next few smoke as well as the first.

Re: Review: 5 Vegas Gold "Robusto" - Smoking RIGHT NOW!

After smoking a bunch of 5 Vegas Golds, I have a hard time paying top dollar for any mild CT wrap cigar that costs more. I enjoy a mild CT wrap cigar in the morning, and for me the 5 Vegas Gold is "the gold standard" -- the mild cigar I compare all others to. Very few measure up when you factor in flavor, construction, and price. The flavor gains some depth after they sit for 6-8 months. Still mild, but a bit more complex.

Thanks for the review, keep 'em coming!

If you like mild connecticut, try the RP Connecticut. You can grab boxes of both of these on CBid for $34-$43. So basically $2 apiece. (I just got a box of RP Conn Robusto for $37 and a box of 5 Vegas Gold Robusto for $34. Money well spent.)
