I just received a fiver of the RP SG torpedoes from Cbid today, and fired one up. I liked it; the only other one I had was over a year ago, and I don't remember much about it.
I lit this one as soon as I got home and was out on the deck grilling some steaks. I could smell the barnyard smell, and knew it was gonna be a good smoke. I cut it, and the pre light taste was sweet. Once I lit it, the aroma was sweet also and the promise of better things was on the air. The first several inches were kind of mild and smooth, and the taste of the sweetness from the wrapper was there. The construction was firm and solid, and the draw was consistent; each time I drew on it, I got tasty smoke. Now this isn't anything like the Vintage 1990's which I've been smoking; there is no ligero in this, therefore it is different. But I came to like this cigar, because even though it was not as strong as the Vintages and the Edges, it has it's own character. It is smooth, tasty (leather, nuts and wood); has a damned good aroma, and burns straight and true. Not much spice within the first third of it but, the spiceiness began to show itself in the second third. It wasn't overpowering but, it was there. It was in the final third that the spices made an appearance, and made all the difference in the type of cigar it is. All of the flavors and the spice showed up in the final third and really captured my attention. So, for me the character of this smoke is gradual and never boring. It isn't going to knock your socks off right outta the gate but, if you stay with it, you will not regret a minutes of the experience. I am curious though as to why it is so expensive, I wouldn't have thought it would be more expensive than the Edge or the Vintages. I know it is well made, and it's an RP but, (IMO) this isn't a 7 or 8 dollar cigar. At any rate, as long as I can get them for 19 bucks a fiver on cbid, I will continue to smoke and enjoy them. And btw, I would recommend these smokes to anyone.

Re: RP Sungrown torpedos
Thanks for the review. I had my first RP Sungrown a few nights ago, the Robusto, and liked it so much I picked up some more Robustos and some Torpedos yesterday. Very tasty!

Check this link for good prices as well.

Re: RP Sungrown torpedos
Thanks for the review. I found it very helpful as I'm awaiting delivery of some of the pc's, and they'll be my first RP's ever.

Wow! You aren't kidding! The prices at longashes on the SG's are damned good! I compared em to the prices at CI and they are about 35 dollars cheaper for the Toro size for 20 sticks.

Re: RP Sungrown torpedos
Great review! I like this cigar and have had similar experiences with the smoke. Very bright flavor, pretty mild, good flavor, always awesome construction. I've got some aging that I will have to give a shot one of these days from the original RP chest.
Cheers!

Re: RP Sungrown torpedos
It's a great cigar! I got the RP Sungrown Seconds Bundle from famous smokes for a real deal, tastes just fine (there are issues with them though).
Nice review, I could agree more. -- Erik |

Re: RP Sungrown torpedos
I'm a big fan of this cigar. The last one I had was after a tasty steak dinner.
