Torano 1916 Cameroon Robusto Review

This cigar was good, on the milder side of medium, good juicy flavor. Size was 5.5" x 52. Construction could have been better, was pretty loose. This burned very cool; very long 2" ashes at a crack. I would have liked more flavor throughout ; seemed a little blah some of the time. Just enough flavor to keep me interested.

Just got a fiver off the devil site and these were pretty dry; not crackily but there was a little wrapper damage near the cap that marred the experience a tad. I'll let these chill for 2-4 weeks and regain their composure then I will smoke another and give a more comprehensive review in this thread.

I plan on actually picking up a few of these sticks this weekend. I smoked the 1959 gold label and found it to be an excellent cigar. Pefect for a full-bodied lover like me. I look forward to your next review

Re: Torano 1916 Cameroon Robusto

I've smoked a Churchill size of this cigar. I read rave reviews and I decided to smoke it for my graduation cigar.

It was presented just beatifully with a nice cedar sleeve and I love the band!

But I was underwhelmed by this cigar. I generally agree with you on the cigar being "blah" from time to time. Actually in my experience it was more often than not. Pair that with a too-tight draw and I only smoked about two inches of this one.

Re: Torano 1916 Cameroon Robusto

I have a box of these in Churchill as well. I've only smoked 3 so far and my experiences have been the following:

1st: Kick ass, on the mild side but very flavorful

2nd: Was having humi problems so this one was dry. It was very bad but not the cigar's fault obviously.

3rd: This one was only yesterday so I remember it quite well. It was overall bland and had the same slightly woody flavour throughout. I was pretty disappointed as I was expecting something along the lines of my first experience with this smoke. Other than the flavour, other qualities of the cigar were perfect. I only ashed it twice, in about 2 inch incremenets. The burn started out slightly uneven but quickly became perfect all around. The smoke stayed cool until the very nub.

This got me thinking about how could such a well made cigar turn out to be so bland. It is a pretty mild smoke so I think my coffee may have overwhelmed it. I will have to try it again while drinking some sort of lager beer, or nothing it all. It also might need more rest time in the humi. It's been about 3 weeks since it's been rehumidified so it may need more to fully recompose.

Re: Torano 1916 Cameroon Robusto

I smoked my first one today.
Here's my take:
Carlos Torano cigars have amazed me since my first Exodus '59. I would like to say that I prefer Nicaraguan and Honduras smokes over D.R.s. "Dominicans are just too weak and bland for me", I would say. I rated the 1916 Cameroon a 93. In comparison, I gave the Exodus 1959 an 84 and the Padron '64 a 95. (just so you know how I judge).
Overall, it was great. It smelled good, tasted good, was built right, solid ash... but it burned unevenly the first third or so.
If this were the only cigar in the world, I'd happily smoke 'em.

My rating may change over time. I still have 4 of these.
Your mileage may vary...

Re: Torano 1916 Cameroon Robusto

I have been smoking mainly spicy Nicaraguan smokes lately so this was a change of pace for me.

I thought it was very good. Leaned to the mile side. I guess sometimes there was kind of a void of lack of flavor, but when the flavor was there it was rich and smooth. I also found it pretty sweet, not maduro sweet, but mildly sugary sweet. I was drinking Jim Beam Black and the sweetness in the booze was jockeying with the smoke. So I went and got some Chivas Regal - same result. Coffee with cream - same result. Coffee black - finally something to balance/offset the sweetness to the cigar.

Overall I liked them. Next time I'll remember, mild and somewhat sweet. Morning or maybe dessert smoke. I thought it was a great change of pace from the spicy stuff and it might also be for those who are smoking the heavier bodied stuff on a regular basis.

Construction, burn - flawless (it's a Torano after all). Aroma excellent, oddly didn't notice the sweetness in the smoke when it was burning in the ashtray.

FWIW,

BillyBarue

Love the 1916 Robusto, enough so that I bought a box and have a box of Torps. on the way. One of my 5 favorite sticks.

I have a soft spot in my heart for that one, it's what started me on the slope. You could say it 'de-flowered' me
