Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
So I'm still in full on sampling mode - picked up two Padron 2000 (one with a Maduro wrapper) and gave the lighter shade a try last night - I'm pretty sure it was a robusto...I'm still trying to get the size identifying down, so bear with me.
The stick lit up nicely and produce a good first plume. A meduim flavored earth tone was the first thing I noticed. I was resigning myself to believe that this would be a pretty decent smoke. After the first inch, the cigar became harder to draw - so I looked down to realize that not only had it been burning unevenly, but the very middle of the filler was the only thing that was still glowing...the darn thing tried to die on me! After relighting the stick and trying to even the burn out, I take a few more puffs to be greeted by a slightly stronger earth/dirt tone - due in part to the relighting and partly becuz of the 3-rapid puffs to get things started again. Had the cigar managed to maintain atleast that much taste with each puff, I wouldn't have been as much disappointed as I ended up: truth is, I couldnt wait for this stick to be over...what a horrible feeling!!!! Another inch down, the earthy tone proves to be consistent - yet the draw begins to become cumbersome yet again. One more re-light and become alittle "bleh" feeling to the whole experience. The burn became hot just becuz I hate to relight twice now AND the ash was becoming brittle to all the extra heat. Finally I decide to cut my losses and walk away from it. Having never tried a Padron before, I'm not sure how good of a first impression it made. I even spoke out loud: "Won't be buying those anymore" and at 4.75/stick I won't be losing sleep when I go and invest in more of my La Gloria's and/or La Unica selections! Flavor gets a 2-3 out of 5...obvious this experience could have been better and I was either in the mood for full flavor or mild...but certainly not what this turned out to be. Burn/Ashing gets a 1 out of 5 - this was truly a frustrating deal and I would like to think that I have smoked enough cigars now to atleast know what I'm talking about in this department...apparently, there are bad apples in the bucket even when regarding cigars! Buying more: 0 out of 5. If you want to send me some for free, I'll smoke them - but for now, I'm not paying money for these. I'll try the 3000 - just to give Padron a chance to redeem themselves, but the 2000 are done for me. I do have the Maduro in the humi and will revist it once I shake this one bad one off. Thanks for reading! KASR Last edited by KASR; 08-17-2006 at 03:42 PM.. |

Fine, more Paddies for the rest of us
. Seriously though, don't let it discourage you from trying more. Let one sit in the humi a few weeks and try one. Or if you are feeling spendy, have a PAN 64. I'll second the LGC's but I've never had a la unica.

I have one more Padron 2000 (maduro) in the humi - so I will eventually have one again. Hopefully, it will make up for this bad experience. ![]() The La Unica (no. 4) has a nice medium earthy tone with an amazing cameroon wrapper that delivers a creamy flavor that just perfectlycompliments the entire smoke. I recommend this one. KASR |

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
I had my first ever problem with a 2000 last night. Clipped it and when I went to light it, I nearly pulled the flame through the entire length of the stick. It was almost as if someone had cored the cigar and turned it into a soda straw. However, I'm a bit of a tightwad and I wasn't going to let it stop me.
The flavor was good, but I had to be careful not to overheat it and after a half-hour of dropping ash all over myself, I sent it to an early grave. Just one of those fluke things you occasionally run into with a handmade product. |

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
I really have been buying a lot of Maduros lately and often the 3000 maddie. So I was reading here about the Naturals being good also. So I picked up a few at the B&M to try out. All 3 I didn't care for. Just not the flavor I like. Bought some more 3000 maddies and all was well. So my personal preference is the Maduro wrapper when it comes to the Thousand series. Give the Maduro a try and I think you'll be happy.

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
Hey man I wouldn't write of Padron just yet. I had a 3000 Maduro that I just didn't care for about 3 or 4 months ago. I sort of wrote off Padron.
But two weeks ago I decided to pick up the Padron Londres in the natural shade. I figured that at 2.30 a pop I wouldn't lose if it was a bad stick. Here is my review. Quote:

For what it's worth, I love both the natural and maduro Padron's. Give the Maddie a try, it has a little bit different taste than the natural and it might appeal to you more. After you have gone through some other smokes, give the Padron's another shot. I have recently come to enjoy some cigars that I cast off initially. Your taste will change over time. Enjoy the ride.

Give the maddie a try. you just got a bad stick. I bought a box of the 2000 maddies and they are awesome. I agree with you on the La Gloria's. They are becoming one of my favorites. |

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
I wonder if the box was mistreated before it got to your merchant
... sounds like it was left in the back of the delivery van for a week during the heat wave! I've only had great luck with Padron's. In the end, you may or may not like their flavor, but they are generally very well constructed. I'd chock it up to some abuse along the supply chain and try another from a different source.

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
Like everyone else said...don't give up on them just yet. For the price, they are worth another try or two. If you still don't like them, that's cool (no matter how many comments you get here about insulting a padron
) It's all about what you like. Also...if you do buy a bunch of padrons and find you DON'T like them...I'll be more than happy to "dispose" of them for you ![]() |

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
Padrons are some of the best out there IMO. Did you purge after relight? Do you draw through the cigar when lighting? If so,not good. It superheats the filler and changes the flavor profile for the worse. It sounds like it might have been a tad moist also. At least you can say it did'nt break the bank...

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
I will say what most have said before, don't judge a stick with just one try. I have found that the 2000's/3000's are best with a month or two rest in the humi.
The other thing you may want to consider is finding a place where you can get these for a better price. $4.75 for a 2000 seems pretty high for that stick. |

Re: Padron 2000...cuz they didn't have 3000
Thanks for all the feedback guys/gals. Donweb just sent me a 64 anni....I've heard they are tops and I'm so tempted to smoke it - but having it in the humidor is just so flattering!! I'm going to try to the 2000M this weekend and we'll see how it goes! I'll also hunt around for a cheaper price...I guess that's one of the pitfalls of being a newb: might get overpriced due to my inexperience. So thanks for the heads up!
Also, when lighting, I did not draw from the torch. however, I didn't purge after relighting, so maybe I messed it up there. ![]() KASR |
