Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

I was shocked to not see a review for the OWR anywhere on CS. (making use of my acronyms.) As is I finally picked up a few, because I couldn't control myself, and found it even more difficult to control myself once they were in my humidor. I picked up the Toro Maduro which is a beautiful 6 1/2 by 52 inch square pressed smoke. The stick has a beautiful, dark, oily maduro wrapper and just looks absolutely perfect. The construction of all RP cigars is almost always flawless, and this is no exception. The cigar burnt perfectly even, and its ash is a snowy white. It has an excellent draw, at times however, it was a bit loose.
Now with the taste is where it differs from many of the other RP's out there, but it still has a complex flavor for such a mild smoke. The 90s and 92s I've smoked have all had a spicy twist to them. Not the OWR. It if full of a nutty, cocoa, earthy flavor that just pops from the first draw. Flavor continues to intensify all the way through, but never gets harsh, even towards the end.
I'd have to say this is the absolute star of the RP line. I loved it. Basically straight from the store it had a great taste, so with a few months of age, I have a feeling this is a cigar that will age wonderfully. The only issue with this cigar for me is the price. I'm not sure what they are retailing for, but at my local place they are going for about 15 bucks. I do believe it is worth the money it for an occasional smoke, because I think it can hold its own against just about any new cigar out there.
Never really been one for rating, but on a scale of 1-10 id really have to give it a 9. I mean perfect its not, but its damn close, and with a some age under its belt, I know it would be a superstar.

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

Nice review, a couple of the local B&M's have been "nudging" me toward the Rocky Patels lately. One guy told me that the Rockys are so popular nowadays that they are starting to bump other sticks to carry Rockys. The only barrier for me is price as well, 15.00 a stick is getting into that "reserved" bracket for me, personally. If I can find 'em at a good price, Ill pick up an OWR.

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

I have a toro each of the Maduro and the Corojo in my cabinet that I have been wanting to try. I have heard a few good reviews, but I figure with a few more months of age they will be even better (2 months so far). I don't have a local dealer (got em on vacation in Tampa) so if I smoke them they wil be gone.
Thanks for the review.

The Old World Reserve are a damn fine smoke! I can't wait to buy a few and put some age on em' so I can see how they are a few months down the road.

[QUOTE=yachties23]I was shocked to not see a review for the OWR anywhere on CS. (making use of my acronyms.)

Here was mine from another post...

Re: RP Olde World Reserve

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I did. I ran out and bought a bunch of them because I heard them being compared to PAM's. (my favorite) I smoked the torpedo last week and wasn't that impressed. I never did a review, but I'll give it a whirl here.

It started of great. Pre-lit draw, smell, appearence, all that was good.
The ash held on for a good inch and a half before I flicked it. After that the smoke went downhill. The flavor was smooth from the beginning...smooth, but boring- not much going on. After the initial ash was off this cigar was very hard to keep lit. I gave it plenty of chances with re-lights, but the flavor never really kicked up and keeping it lit just became altogether too frustrating.

I have more, that I'll give some time. I never write off a cigar after just one. Sit on yours in your humi and ten see what you think. I hope my next date with the RP Olde world will be more satisfying.

In comparison to a PAM...my first PAM (right off the shelf) blew me away.

BTW how was my first review??

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

I was just over at my local B&M and they now have a new humidor display and a place to put (under lock and key) all of their top shelf cigars. The owners wife showed me the humi and I immediately saw she had the RP's (Olde world Reserves) and 1926 and 1964 PAM's in there along with some Torano Tributes. But she seemed proudest of the other humi in which she had her Gurkhas. I felt bad enough not to tell her that Gurkhas for me are old hat now, and that I could probably expand her inventory some. But, I had my sights set on her new humi with it's contents. The only RP she didnt have were the Nordings, and wasn't sure of what I was referring to, but she told me she still has a lot of smokes back ordered from the RTDA she just got back from. There is a trip to the B&M in my future this weekend; I may even get to try my first PAM and Olde World Reserve

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

I smoked the one gifted to me by Mr. Maduro, and while it was a good, solid stick, I felt the hype over it and the price, were a bit outta line.

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

I was eyeing these up the other day but the price scared me away. Your review is making me wonder if I should have said " what the f-ck..." Regardless I did leave with a couple Padron, Punch and something else I can't remember @ the moment..... AND I stayed within my budget which almost NEVER happens when I walk in a cigar shop! <mental note>

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

After reading this and the other RP OWR reviews I picked one up in a sampler at a B&M that I visit only it was the corojo one and not the maduro (I have one of those but it is resting in the bottom of one of my humis). It was a very tasty smooth stick. It seemed to me like what a vintage might taste like if it had a ton of age on it. I will definitely pick up a few for the humi.

Re: Rocky Patel Old World Reserve

Thanks for the great review. The day I joined CS I posted a question about these in the newbie forum, wondering if they were readily available because I had trouble finding these after my first ones, I didn’t know my way around, and I’m still finding it. I have seen mixed reviews but I love these cigars both the corojo and maduro. My B&M had 3 chests of these back in July, I hadn’t heard anything about them, though I do like most Rocky Patel cigars. The wrapper was so oily it shined, the stick just looked special, my friend and I bought a couple each, at about $10 for the Toro, brought them home and smoked with good bourbon, and we both thought this was a first rate smoke. This is one of my favorite cigars out there regardless of price, the taste, burn, and draw are all dead on from light to the nub. The post above about trouble keeping it lit is not the first I’ve seen, luckily I haven’t had that problem and I have smoked quite a few of these now. I don’t like comparing cigars, trying to compare this to a PAM is just not right in my book, they are totally different smokes. Both great in their own right, both will always have a place in my humidor for different occasions. The shop sold out of all 3 chests within 2 weeks, leaving me extremely disappointed when I went back, credit card in hand ready to go to work on these. I managed to find more on-line, it took a few calls to find them. They seem to be a little more accessible now. As much as I don’t like to compare I also can’t stand too much hype, there is just no way to live up to it. I think that is one of the reasons I like this cigar so much, I went in blind, just smoked one to try it, not because of any review or ad. I find that I am usually at least a little disappointed after seeing a great review or rating, and I smoke looking for all of the characteristics that I read or heard about, the fact is that everyone is different, and enjoys different qualities in their smoke. Running kind of long here, but I’m happy to see a positive review, most I have seen are disappointed, because of the hype. For my money this is worth every penny.
