Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Consul

Honestly, I was REALLY hoping this stick would be great after all the positive talk surrounding it.

I was disappointed.

[SIZE=2]The prelight draw was very tight, so I knew right off the bat this was going to be an issue. Upon lighting, I noticed a very bitter and vegetal taste that was definitely not enjoyable. I purged and the taste did not disapate. I kept truckin' on this thing hoping some spice would kick in, but it never did. I ended up putting it out at the 2/3 point.

To summerize, the draw was too tight for me, the taste was not great, and the flavor profile did not change at all through the 2/3 of the stick I gutted through.

Maybe I got my hands on a bad stick, but I can tell you I wont be buying any of these in the near future.

Re: Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Consul

Thats a bummer. I have a box of Machito I bought from another BOTL but I think they have several years age on them. I pulled another one out a few nights ago and it was divine. I am surprised by the Machito's strngth & consistency and very UNIQUE taste. I've not had another cigar that tastes quite like this one. Even other Nicaraguan sticks. The taste was one dimensional but pleasing enough to keep me saying 'oh my damn'. Hopefully if you have more of these you won't give up on them but rather let them sit for 6 months and revisit. But then again your tastes could just be different.

Thanks for the review.

Oh so far the draw on each was perfect. I've noticed that sometimes the aging seems to allow the sticks to dry out a bit and loosen a little. maybe not enough to fix an outright draw problem, but I've experienced that helping.

I think the Machito is the best of the line. Never had much luck with the Consul. Be sure to test the draw before lighting. If too tight, let it rest a while longer. Nuthin' worse than a dissapointing cigar.

I had one of the sticks from Verdell's box so mine was a special aged stick and it was amazing, really good flavour, but certainly not for a newb, had one hell of a kick and left me high for hours from the nicotine in it. I guess you just got a green or bad stick, i think these need a little age on them, i have a consul in my humi from another source and im letting it sit for a few years before i smoke it.

I've had the machito- same experience that Ironfreak had.

Not much in the way of flavour- tight draw- little smoke.

Dissapointing.

Huh. I picked up a fiver of these from the devil site and remember enjoying them. Draw wasn't a problem and, though I don't remember details, I remember being pleased with the flavor. I'll have to grab another one tonight or tomorrow and report back. This just doesn't match up with my experience....

Oh, I'm sorry. I said I had the machito- I was wrong - I too had a Consul that I was dissapointed with.

My friend really enjoys the Gran Consuls though.

I have smoked several consuls and have yet to experience what you described, and the oldest might have had 2 months on it. I think you must have gotten a bad stick.

The two I've smoke have been very similar to the review above. Especially the second was very tight draw. Even though this is a very unique taste these seem too fresh to me. After a year or two I'm sure they will be exceptional, just didn't seem complex at all.

I've heard of problem in this size and from CBid. I will let the rest of these rest for a long while before I try another. Also, this stick lives up to it's reputation as a nicotine kick in the pants. I only got half way through and I was jittery! Looking forward to this cigar in 1-2 years or maybe a different size?

I've tooo got a box of the Consuls that I am letting sit for as long as possible so that it, I hope, develops some complexity. I have smoke about ten of these from another box and have had no bad experiences although not all stellar either. A very good, low-priced smoke in my opinion.

Thumbs up Re: Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Consul

I have tried most of the JdN 1970 vitolas and have had draw problems on the Lancero and Gran Consul. Both of these cigars were smoked straight from the cigar store and both required that I toss the sticks.

That said, I have smoked 5 of my box of Churchills and have not had one problem, and the burn is spot-on.

I frigging love these cigars and look forward to buying a box of Machitos for a quick-me-up.

Every single one that I've smoked have been very tight and I've had to toss them. They were all stored at 65%.

Re: Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Consul

That's a shame to hear. I've burnt several Consuls and Torps only to get a enjoyable smoke. Hope your future experiences are ofr the better.
