VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

PRELUDE:
The first VS Selects I sampled were "greenies." They tunnelled... Flavor was kind of "mucky-maduro," and I was disappointed.

Funny, though, how disappointing cigars become treats over time! After 7-8 months in the humidor, a namby-pamby cigar CAN come of age. This is one of those stories.

THE CIGAR, and PRELIGHT:
It's just a garden-variety VS Select, Churchill in configuration. Sharply box-pressed, it's one of those that begs for a bit of "chomping" for a proper fit to the mouth. Tongue-over cap before toasting deliverd what the ad guys at CI promise -- "Milk-Chocolatelyness."

The foot (after months of aging) toastes nicely.

FLAVOR and BURN:
I am stilll ASTOUNDED by how the flavor of this cigar matures and mellows! It's got the sort of "Chocolate-Dirt" flavor that I love so mich... Yet time in the humidor gives it a MELLOWNESS that I cannot describe.

Burn improves with age, as well! Square-pressed cigars are (characteristically) a frustrating burn. But this thing (after time and aging) burned perfectly from foot-to-head.

OVERALL:
If you can't let this cigar rest in your humi for several months, DON'T BUY IT!!!

If you have patience (and room in your humi or cooler), let this cigar go to sleep for several months, and break one out for the evening. I doubt that you'll be sorry!

(As usual, my thoughts and opinions are purely subjective. I offer my reviews ONLY with the they may be usefull for comparative purposes.)

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

The Victor Sinclair Vintage Selects were one of my first purchases at the beginning of my addiction to CBID in Apr. Probably my first box purchase. There were some favorable reviews back than which backed up my bidding on these.

Quite frankly I liked them when they were new. Didn't have any burn problems and thought the flavor was pretty rich - given I was (and probably still am) pretty new to judging smokes.

I haven' had one in a couple months. Time to dig back in. Thanks for the review I am looking forward to see how they are and see if smoking other cigars over the last couple months has jaded my opinion. I doubt it, I recall really liking these smokes.

BARIC,

The VC line is a "lay-down" line.

I WISH that the "greenies" were better, but they're NOT!

GOOD NEWS?
There's that "chocolatty-dirty-nutty" flavor you want from a good maduro.

BAD NEWS?
This cigar isn't worth a full piss-pot until it's aged for a frew months. If you're looking for a good greenie, don't go here!!!!!!!!!!

BETTER NEWS?
If you can wait it out, it's a chewy-chocolatally-messy-mass-of-flavor that's tough to resist!!!!

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

I recently got a box of these, thinking I couldnt go wrong for 28 bucks, and wow I even with a bad mindset thinking this was going to be a get what you pay for experience, and not a lot of rest in the humidor, this was still a extremely nice smooth smoke and great flavors, and the price was better than right!

TIMBER... You came up with the right word... "SMOOTH."

Don't get me wrong. I love the darker, richer smokes... But (with age), this is an "economy" cigar that delivers on the promise.

Onward and Forward!

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

Good review. I have a short experience with cigars, but I bought a 5'er from cbid, based on the description and reviews on top25. The line that hooked me was "like smoking a Heath Bar."

They were right. Smoked 'em (green) and bought another. Maybe the first one you smoked was bad, or my palate isn't seasoned enough yet to know the difference. I'm not crazy about the sharp box press though, but the flavor made up for it.

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

Thanks for the reviews all. I had been wondering about these. They are ranked in the Top 25 list and the cheapest one at $2. I was wondering if that was too good to be true but it doesn't seem like it and I am going to try these out and give a review on them.

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

Smoked a Series 55 "Blue" last night. Totally different stick than when I picked them up off of Cbid. Have to use that word smooth. Cigar seems to be a sleeper, the less people that are hunting them down on Cbid the better.

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

I smoked one about a week after I got them in and thought they were a pretty decent cigar, nothing crazy, but after your review I will definitely let them sit a little longer.

Re: VS Vintage Select -- Don't under-rate it!

Well my box showed up 2 weeks ago. I have tried 3 so far and after the first one I wasn't totally hooked on them, but I found myself gravitating toward them for the flavor and value. These are excellent just 2 weeks out of the box. I didn't have a problem with them and they burned great with long salt/pepper ash. Leaves you with lots of taste on your palate and is chocolately, earthy. It's a great buy. I have a box of the Torpedos. There are some veins on the wrapper, but it doesn't affect anything, unless you just like looking and admiring a cigar. Rate them 8.75/10.
