Padron 1964 Diplomatico (M) Review

This is my first foray into the world of Padron 1964, really my first Padron as far as I can recall – and let me say, this stick matches or exceeds the hype.

My first impression was that the construction was impeccable – not a flaw – solid, tight, and oily from foot to cap. After cutting the cigar at the shoulder, it actually looked too tightly packed to draw well, but both pre-light and post-light draw was excellent.

Taste - I have never smoked a cigar that remains this smooth through a panoply of flavors. As for the flavor – it is hard to describe because the first thing that occurs is how ‘round’ the cigar tastes – meaning that no single flavor predominates at one time – the balance of espresso, cocoa, nuts and cream exhaust the palette’s ability to separate them, and this gave way to more ‘floral’ or ‘herbal’ flavors about midway. This cigar never became harsh, even at ¾ of an inch, and burned very well through the whole smoke, which lasted nearly nine solid innings. It never really tasted like a straightforward Maduro, and if I smoked it blind I would have had a hard time determining that it was a Maduro at all.

Do it. Buy one and hold it in the humi for your next special occasion. You won't be disappointed. Trust me.

I stopped into Serious on Sunday after brewing a batch of beer (Hydrated's recipe, thanks!) and picked up a couple handfuls of singles. I picked up an Anni. Exclusivo (M) while I was in there, added it to the Principe (N) in my humidor. That place is dangerous.

Fuente: your review makes me want to put the fire to one of them right now.

A truly unbiased recommendation by the man with the Padron avatar!

I have a question for you box pressed gorillas... how firm or hard should these cigars be? I have some PAM's in my humi that got too dry, and they've been held at 65% for about 6 weeks now. I don't want to torch them too quickly, so I went to my B&M to pick up a couple to try... but theirs seemed really firm too. I don't have any experience with box pressed smokes... how firm are these supposed to be? I've read some reviews of the PAM's that describe them as being hard as rocks...

Re: Padron 1964 Diplomatico (M)

I like all cigars on the firm side. Box pressed or not, I gently squeeze the stogie to see if its firm enough. The cigar shoulg "give" a little, not too much that it feels spongy, but not so hard where you feel it may crack or the wrapper might split. Just firm enough where you can press it in slightly and it retakes it shape.
Thats how I like 'em.

Re: Padron 1964 Diplomatico (M)

I could have written this exact review. It's uncanny. I lost my virginity about 3 weeks ago on my first Padron 1964 Diplomatico. I paid $17 for it at an upscale shop and nursed it for an hour and a half. Since then I went back and bought two more which are now resting in their own spot seperated from all others in my humi. My dilema is do I search the net for a box at what price ??

Great review.
