More Cigar Reviews

Smoked some cigars tonight in this order:

Cinco Vegas Series A: Even better then before, this one was an Artisan, the robusto. Very, very good and earthy, it has rested for a week or two and flavors have noticeably developed. Also smoked the Apostle which was less flavorful (and oddly enough, was less flavorful even in the prelight draw, very noticeably so), and got bad before it hit the last 4 inches. I've decided to get a box of the robustos. Pre light draw, you're going to laugh at me but I strongly detected mushrooms which was definately pleasant for me. Maybe that is how my sensory organs interpret earthiness. I'm going to buy a few boxes. Great construction and never went out, ash held on very well and was razor sharp. Torpedo version is also a great cigar.

Danli Reserve Sungrown Torpedo: Wow what a terrible cigar. Wrapper ripped on contact, pre light draw was terrible tasting. Lighting up the cigar, the other person in the car and I both said "dog hair" at the same time. Smoking it was torture...

Punch Rothschild Double Maduro: I thought it was pretty good, but it wasn't exactly my kind of cigar. Pretty spicy and definately sweet. I know a lot of people like these, and I know I wanted to like it too. I don't think I'm "seasoned" enough for these. I'm going to go look at some reviews and see what other people thought about it, I also have the maduro version in my tupperdor waiting to be smoked, and a natural version on order.

Joya de Nicaragua: Not bad tasting, it went out once every few minutes until I got tired of it. No way I would buy a box of these.

Thanks for reading!

Thanks for the reviews. Always good to know which sticks are tasty, but also which ones have the dog hair quality!

Yes indeed, I would suggest steering clear of it unless you enjoyed lighting wet dogs on fire in your youth but just didn't know why

Dog hair huh? That is classic. Good reviews! I need to bust out another 5 Vegas series A and see how they appeal to me now. I have not tried one since I was a cigar smoker novice. I love the 5 Vegas classic however.

Mmmm, had one of those Artisans myself on Saturday evening, tasty smoke indeed. I definitely see a box purchase of those in my future, just have to find room first.

Re: More Cigar Reviews

The 5 Vegas A's are wonderful smokes, especially for the price, and once they have some quality time in the humi, they are even better. There are many threads in here devoted to these smokes, and you can get a lot more information about them.
Thanks for the review, and for the warning about the Danli.

Re: More Cigar Reviews

I love the A series Artisan, and I can't wait to try the classic series.

Good reviews, i cant stand cigars that go out too often so i agree with your decision on the JdNs.

Thanks Baric!

I smoked a 5 Vegas Gold today, it was weird though; it varied puff to puff. Half of them tasted like burnt plastic, the other half were heavenly. It also left an ashy taste in my mouth. Anyone else experience this? There was a huge stem/twig running down the entire length of it.

Nope, every 5Vegas gold I have had has been excellent.

Re: More Cigar Reviews

I really like the Punch, I think you will warm up to it. The JdN is a real but kicker, I am suprised you had a burn problem, have not had that problem. The 5 Vegas A is a very good stick. No experiance with the Danli yet.

Thanks for the reviews.

I don't want to disparage this company's good name, the first Gold I smoked was excellent after the first inch, and I think my problems with this one arose from the stem being in there. I'm going to pick up a box or three. I often spend an hour or two at a cafe in the morning, I suspect this would be a perfect after or during breakfast smoke.

It was weird, normally when I knock ash off a cigar the middle of the ember protrudes out significantly farther then the edges, you know what I mean? On the JdN, the interior was a cave upon examination. It was concave for a good quarter inch. It went out very often.

I'm going to pick up a box soon and age it for a while, maybe you could recommend a reasonable aging time? Keeping in mind I don't have an abundance of cigars to smoke in the meantime of course! A lot of people say that these cigars need aging a lot more then others to show their true colors. I look forward to exploring the rest of the Punch line in the future.

PS: Smoked an Upmann Robusto today, not terribly impressed. I think the best word I can conjure for it is mediocre.

Re: More Cigar Reviews

Smoked the Danli Reserve robusto today, and its much better then the Sungrown torpedo IMO. Dark, reddish-brown wrapper, lighting it up I nearly had a heart attack! It was like gargling with hot sauce (in other words, very, very spicy!). The spice tamed down but didn't completely go away. After a minute it unfortunately went out. I purged, relit and purged again, flavor was the same, pretty good. It threatened going out frequently (IE, produced thin amounts of smoke so I had to draw hard then purge to get it going again.) It also canoed heavily. Ash was almost black.

Not a terrible cigar, however, considering construction issues not good either in my opinion. Price is good, however it was far too spicy for me, made me sick after a while.

If you like spicy cigars, try this out, I also recommend letting them age for a while.
