The LE 2008 has a cool oval box-press shape. The wrapper is a light brown with one noticeable vein. Appears well-constructed with no soft spots, a good cap, and minimal visible seams. The wrapper feels great - it's smooth and almost velvety, like a supple leather. I like the bands too, right down to the detail of the gold dots in the black lettering of the marque name (which you can see in the final photo). The colors and layout reminded me of an old movie theater matinee.
I used the punch on and got a nice firm draw, with a sweet tobacco flavor prelight. Based on the promise of the look, feel, and prelight flavor, I was excited to get started.
Fired right up with a sweetly spicy mild-medium flavor. That was pleasant, but the smoke was thin and weak. The draw opened a little from it's initial firmness. I had to retouch within the first inch due to bad canoeing. Ash bent off to the side strangely. Not very good all-around so far.
It got a little better, and I started to taste some cinnamon. Smoke output and quality improved a little - not great and a little brown-ish in color, but better than the start. By the midway point of the cigar, I got a little more richness and smoothness, but by the end of the 2nd third it declined somewhat. I didn't have to retouch any more, and I'd rate this at medium(-) flavor and medium strength now.
I still got that slightly sweet cinnamon spice and some tobacco, along with some a bit of nutty flavor. I did have to retouch again due to canoeing along the same line as earlier. The last 1.5" was the best part of the cigar, rich and creamy and flavorful with nice thick smoke.
Hard to know what to make of the LE 2008. It looked and felt excellent. Had several burn issues. Smoke output and richness varied up and down and up and down. The flavor, like the smoke, fell flat at times. It was generally pretty good, but had minimal finish in the beginning and at a point in the middle of the stick.
I'm guessing there was a construction problem with a seam of loose filler down the length of the cigar which made it draw too loosely at times, caused the canoeing, and periodically reduced the smoke and flavor quality. Bottom line, the high points were good, and the low points were mediocre. I have another of these, and I hope the next experience will make good on the promising characteristics this one displayed. Feel like this could and should be a 88-90-pointer at least.
