Smoked my first Ashton VSG tonight

Well, this was my first VSG, and I was hoping it would live up to the hype. Well, it did. It was very, very good. It had a nice, dark, well constructed wrapper. The draw was a little tight, which is how I prefer it, and it produced lots of nice aromatic smoke. The taste was also very pleasant. All in all, one of the better smokes I've had yet. I enjoyed this out in the back yard at about 11:00 with my pooch. It was a nice quiet night, and a little chilly at about 49 degrees. I have MOON to thank for this wonderful smoke. I enjoyed this with a bottle of root beer, which is my go to smoking drink. Add the VSG to the "I'd smoke it again" list. Oh, before I forget, I can't remember the size, but it was close to a churchill size.

I have been wanting to try these but am concerned as to whether I need to let them rest for several months first. How old was the VSG you tried?

It's been resting for a month I'd say, but as it was a gift from MOON, I have no idea how old it was. Maybe he'll chime in sometime.

They are definitely tasty smokes, however, I think the padron anniversary maduros are slightly better IMO.

Great review, definitely up there at the top of the NC cigar list. Much better than the regular Ashton lines.

Yeah, I had a regular Ashton a while back, and it was good, but very mild. This cigar was much better.

When I first started smoking I had a Ashton Cabinet #3, nothing special at all. Didn't have much flavor and had a bad NC aftertaste. For a while, the VSG was one of the best NC cigars I had ever smoked, then came the padrons, anejos and tatuajes. I have a couple in my humidor, I will have to smoke one to see if my tastes and opinion has changed. They are some really nice looking cigars, the wrapper is darker than a natural, but not as dark as a maduro. It has its own distinctive color that says VSG.

Re: Smoked my first Ashton VSG tonight

Glad you enjoyed the VSG. I think if memory serves me right I sent you an Illusion. Its been a while and alot of cigars have gone out since then. They were not in the humi very long either. I had picked up a couple of them a few days before I sent out that package. I have always smoked VSG's right after I get them. I can't hold onto them very long they are to good. Never had a bad one though.

Nice hit, Moon! The VSG Illusion is probably my favorite NC cigar. For one thing, it's a really stylish looking vitola, long and slender. The construction is always perfect and the flavor is unique: fruity with a good dollop of boot polish and a hint of the barnyard. For some reason, this is the slowest selling member of the VSG line at my B&M and the last few I've bought there have been covered in plume.

Dang, lucky you. After a big puff, I'd sip a little root beer, and the flavor combination made it taste like a rootbeer float. I love it when that happens.
