Comparison-Ashton VSG vs Ashton Cabinet Review

I always thought that Ashton Cigars were overpriced, but with all the great reviews that the VSG gets basically every day here I decided to pick one up. I grabbed a VSG torpedo and A Cabinet series Torpedo, and smoked the two over the last few days. Personally The VSG just looks awesome, the dark sun grown wrapper just looks amazing. The cabinet is a 6x52 connecticut wrapper, which has a very peppery taste... not alot of punch however, and for 10 bucks it left me totally unimpressed. Than I lit up the VSG, and it blew my doors off. The torp is a 6.5 x 55 the flavors are sooo much more distinct even with a newb taste buds. There are hints of cream and nut and spice...The main issue here though is price, VSGs at the local places up by me go for 15ish, but for an occasional treat, you can't beat the VSG over the Cabinet series.

Thanks for the comparo. I just smoked a VSG last night, and it was great. Never had a regular cabinet though.

Hey Yachties, try some of the online vendors and you can find the Vsg for msrp instead of 15 bucks. By the way the tres mystique is one of my favorites.

Its like putting a lightweight boxer in the ring with a heavyweight. The heavyweight (VSG) IMO will KO the lightweight (cabinet) every time. However if you put the lightweight (cabinet) in the ring with another lightweight the cabinet will hold its own.
I personally like both of these cigars but they are really very different.

I don't think there's any comparison here, same manufacturer and they obviously put the better raw materials in the VSG so there is no way the Cabinet will be as good of a cigar.

It might be possible to do this comparison between brands, where a cheaper stick could be better than a more expensive one, but not within the same brand.

I agree, no comparison. The regular Ashton cigars or at least the cabinet series don't do much for me. They are really kind of mild and the flavor profile is not very good (bland - nothing special). The VSG's on the other hand are very nice smokes and the dark wrapper is pretty awesome - these can stand there own against other "premium" cigars that can readily be obtained. The wrapper on the ESGs is pretty nice as well.

I also agree that the tres mystique is a very nice little cigar and not that expensive (compared to the rest of the line).

Next time, you should compare a VSG to a padron anniversary (1964 or a 1926, or to an oliva master blends), that is probably a more even competition.

Great review of these cigars, I'm willing to bet you won't be purchasing that many ashton cabinets in the future.

I enjoy all Ashton's - but yeah - no actual fight it out comparison here. Good review though for most who haven't had the Ashton lines yet. I mostly enjoy the Cabinets, 898, etc early in the morning out on the deck with a fresh cup of coffee - maybe reading the paper. In that type of setting you may find it a little better than what you found it to be so far.

I just think for a few extra bucks a VSG is well worth it...
