Sol Cubano Sumatra Robusto Review

This is hte second review of the cigars from Harryculo from the Newbie PIF .. hope you enjoy

Cigar: Sol Cubano Sumatra Robusto
Size: 5 X 50 (Robusto)
Wrapper: USA/Conn
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: Nicaragua
Drink: Starbucks Cafe Latte Non fat two splenda please :-)

Background: I receivd this cigar in the Newbie PIF from Harryculo. Smoked it on the way to class tonight. Since I had good luck with the first stick from him I figured I would try another.

First impression: New this one would have a little more punch to it then the last one. Wrapper was a bit veiny and looked like it might have a small tear about a third of the way down from the foot. Lets see if it causes a problem.

Pre light: I used a cheap plastic guiltine cutter taking off just below the cap. Had a bit of a trouble getting through it cleany probably due to the cheesy cutter then the bad cigar. Fixed it with a little lip action and we were good to go. Intial pre light draw was easy with a bit fo spice.

Light: Easy to light with a couple of matches. I almost always light one match to toast and one match to draw from. (Unless i am outside in whcih case i use a lighter). That tear i mentioned earlier did cause some burn problems which corrected alot easier then i expected. once it got past the tear we were back in buisness. Lots of light grey smoke. Ash held very nicely Only ashed three times.

First third: SPICE SPICE SPICE!! OMG SPICE. IF the flavor in the first few puffs would of continued much longer i would of dumped the cigar. Not a BAd flavor just tasted too spicy . It was like the filler was rolled in freshly gound pepper before making the cigar. The pure spice did go away though.

Second third: Spice was more in the background giving way to leathery and oodsy(is that a word?) flavors. reminded me of camping and sitting by the camfire. Woudl probably of gone really well with a nice cup of green tea.

Last third: My favorite thrid on most cigars. Toasted coffee beans and a pleasant cocoa flavor. The last 3/4 inch did get a little bitter but I was done at that point anyways :-)

Conclusion: Medium Bodied Smoke with a peppery spice to it. I would definately try again but would be cautious. I would buy a fiver not a box to see if that first bit was the same with all of them. It was quite daunting. Other then that it was a very nice cigar. Lots of smoke ... good firm ash.

Grade : 7.5 out of 10 (only becuase of the first bit or it woudl of doen better)

Thanks again Harryculo!!

Re: Sol Cubano Sumatra Robusto

I have been pleasantly surprised by the Sumatra, and especially the Maduro, Sol Cubanos. Sol Cubano are from Oliva so I should not be surprised.

Got them in a 20 pack (toro) sampler from CBID for $28. great cigar for $1.40. Only problem was the sampler was mainly connecticuts. Not to say it is a bad cigar, but the maduros and sumatras I think are much better.

Thanks for the review. Grab a maduro if you get the chance

I'm on my last inch and half of my second sumatra robosto. These sure seam like a great smoke for the money. You don't see much about these, but man for the money, I don't know! I'm a cheap ass and a stickler for a good even burn, and both have delivered flawlessley! To top that, despite being a noob, I'd have to say they have good flavor, a bit of spice, a bit sweet, a bit creamy.

Ugh, just had my first one tonight. I could only get through a inch before I stomped it out in the ashtry. I'm not sure what was worse, the bland flat flavor or the slight aftertaste hint of baby's vomit. The remainder of the 5 pack will have a long detention at the bottom of my cooler before I attempt to try one of these nasty smokes again.

The first third is hard to bear sometimes. It has made me want to toss it out every time I smoke it, but it gets better. I've picked up some nice cocoa, creamy flavors. For the $ it's a good smoke

Re: Sol Cubano Sumatra Robusto

I have been eying these for a while, but have been reluctant due to the mixed reviews. Thanks for adding to my confusion! Great review!

Re: Sol Cubano Sumatra Robusto

Thanks for the review

I admit the only reason I bought these in the first place was the Oliva name and the price. I have bought 6 different 5 packs and have tried some from them all. I think they just need some age. The oldest I have are 4 months old and the one I had this week has improved a bunch, so I think they were pretty green when I got them.

boonedoggle - get a 5 pack and rest them for a few months or longer.
