Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro Review

This was the first of three cigars I got to smoke Friday night.

Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro
Churchill 7.0 X 50 (Double Corona)
Wrapper: USA/Conn. (Maduro)
Binder: Nicaragua
Filler: D.R.,Nic., Peru.
First impression: Was that this was a very well made cigar, with a nice dark wrapper. Not to mention that it looks a mile long.
Pre light: using a punch I got a medium to tight draw, not too bad considering the length of the stick, and the flavor was very light non-distinct tobacco flavor.
Light: good light, easy to handle, with a moderate amount of very mellow smoke.
First third: from the first puff it was very mellow, but tasty, almost a unsweetened coco flavor, with a bit of an earthy under tone. The flavor continues to be very mellow and the coco turned more to an almost tree bark or nut husk flavor, in a good way. The ash was slightly gray but firm, and hung on well to about 2 inches.
Second third: the flavor and smoke started to come on a bit stronger and the draw started to open up a bit. The flavor turned to a bit nutty and earthy.
Last third: this is where she started to draw quit freely not loose just about right and the smoke really started to flow. The flavors were more intense and began to taste like a hassle nut cappuccino that kept getting nuttier the farther it burned. Even at under an inch it stayed smooth, not bitter or harsh. And the smoke stayed fairly cool.
Conclusion: I like this cigar very much, however, it is a stick that should be saved for when you have all day, and it lasted me right at 3 hours, now I may be a bit slower than some, but I think it was well worth the time to keep it cool. It required zero corrections and no relights, the burn was quite amazing, especially considering I just bought it earlier in the day.

Thank you for that bigman, I'm on a maduro quest, and trying to taste as many as possible with the goal of buying a box or two of the really special one. This sounds worth trying, also worth keeping in the humi.

Yes, I’m on a Maduro kick as well. I think this one is a great stick and will be picking up more of them, possibly in other sizes, as I usually go for the robustos and the toros. But this is the only size they had left at the B&M I was at. I might get a couple more this size to keep for the days I have nothing to do.

Re: Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro

Just curious, I have found that my palette is messed up after one cigar, and I cant quite pick out the flavors in the second one as well as if I had fired it up "clean". Did you experience the same thing?

Anyway, I have been a fan of the NC RyJ's for quite a while. I have never had the Reserve Maduro, but Ill put it on the list for a future purchase, and make sure I have ample time to smoke it!

Good review Bigman. I have a fdew of these, and smoked one a few months ago after it had some age on it. I liked it as well, and your review captured the same observations I made. Enjoy!

Re: Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro

My friend bought one of these and smoked it- it tasted like charcoal.

No joke.

Charcoal.

Must have been a real bad stick.

Re: Romeo y Julieta Reserve Maduro

I’m not sure if I missed any flavors because it was the first time I have smoked any of the three sticks that I smoked Friday night. However, I didn’t have any left over taste form one cigar in my mouth before I went to the next one. I was drinking a Barks root beer with the RJ and then I had a Jolt Green before the Gurkha, I was drinking a Diet Coke with that one and continued with the diet coke with the Macanudo. And there was about an hour between the RJ and the Gurkha, and about 30 min before the Macanudo.

The problem I have is when I scald my mouth on say a crispy chicken sandwich on my way home form work and then try to smoke. I was going to review an Indian Tabac Classic Corojo Boxer today but I couldn’t distinguish any thing.

Excellent review! IMHO, you've "found" the "gem" of the RyJ line!

I'm NOT a fan of RyJ in general. I find them dry and flat.

HOWEVER... The Reserve Maduro is an exception! It's a very nice cigar that holds up well to beverage-of-choice!

Hmmm....we seem to have quite similar tastes(excepting the Fidalgo, of course) but I personally really like the NC RyJ line. I find them mild and flavorful...and decently priced!

This is my favorite RyJ model, though.
