RP Vintage 1990 Churchill Review

I'm too much of a newb to post a proper review, so this is more of a "my experience" type post, wondering if any one else had the same.

I had my first Rocky Patel Vintage last night, a 1990 Churchill Tubo. After all of the good reviews on here, I just had to try it. I've got to say, this is one beautiful cigar, dark, not too veiny, just perfect. The smell was wonderful. I cut it and proceeded to light it. It lit very easily and evenly with a torch.

Then I took my first draw and ... was disappointed. With all of the reviews, I thought maybe I was expecting too much, the flavor just didn't seem to be there. Don't get me wrong, it was a nice smoke, but both volume of smoke and flavor just weren't what I was expecting.

I kept smoking it, and about a third of the way through, all of my thoughts on this cigar had changed. Wow, the flavor WAS there, it was burning great requiring one minor touch up, and it was soo smooth.

Once I got toward the end, the flavor was just so great, I had to close my eyes with every draw. Down around 2 inches, I didn't want to let this thing go out. I'd been smoking it for almost 2 hours, but I kept finding myself touching it up with the torch because it was tunneling because I was taking too short of draws so the smoke wouldn't get too hot.

I know, I'm short on descriptive words, but I still find cigar flavors very hard to describe. Maybe once I get some more experience I can post proper reviews.

Anyway, off to cbid to find some; I'm thinking robustos would serve me better.

Re: RP Vintage 1990 Churchill

I won a box of 10 last week but it is the 1992s Havent tried one yet and still trying to decide if I want to leave the tube alone or uncork it. Did yours come with a cork in the end? BTW very nice review.

Yep, mine was a glass tube with a cork. I don't have a humi set up yet (beads are on the way), so I just picked it up from my B&M after work and smoked it that night.

Good review man. Thank you for sharing your experience. I am also a noob and I love the RP 90's. Keep on posting.

Scimmia:
The Churchill vitolas start very slowly, and as you discovered, within the final 6 inches or so, all of the flavors begin to show themselves. Taste the chocolate, the spice, the deep dark flavors. The entire line is like this. If you want a more immediate joltfrom this brand, get the robusots or the toros or the torpedos.

Re: RP Vintage 1990 Churchill

I have smoke prolly 5 of these exact cigars, most with tight draws, I think the tight draw is a combination of the lenth small RG and box press, but yes the box pressed churchills seem very prone to draw problems

Re: RP Vintage 1990 Churchill

I didn't have any draw problems, but mine was not box pressed.

donp, thanks for the confirmation; as I noted in my post, I figured robousto would be the better way to go for me. That's what I'll be looking for for sure.

Re: RP Vintage 1990 Churchill

I have had the same experience with the RP Vintage series - it takes about 1/4 to 1/3 of the 'gar to really get going, then it is an excellent smoke down to the nub. This may be a result of the rolling - if the tops of the leaves are rolled at the foot of the cigar, the first few puffs will be mild by design. Now when I fired up a Carlos Torano reserva, flavors were hitting at the outset. You may want to try one of those.
