Smile Mayorga Robusto Maduro Review

This Mayorga Robusto Maduro has been resting in my coolidor for a little over a week after freezer quarantine. My first cbid order had two sticks with critter holes so everything else was frozen for three days, thawed while still bagged for one day and then into the coolidor. I could not wait to smoke one of these because they looked and smelled so good.

They came with no cellophane. The wrapper is yummy dark like a chocolate bar and it is silky with very small veins. They are boxed pressed 4.7" x 50 Nicaraguan long-filler and binder.

Snipped it with the Palio and took a pre light draw. Nothing too notable but tasty. I toasted the foot and Stinky and I were off. Lots of smoke. Good. Medium body, more on the mild side. The ash was more gray than white but held on well getting knocked off at each 1/3.

The burn had issues before the first inch. I touched it up but it was determined to burn wild. It had one wandering pencil eraser sized lead in the burn. I decided to leave it alone and see if it would settle down but no luck. I knocked off the ash a little more than 1/3 through and touched it up again. After a few more draws it got worse with several trailing spots and two wandering leads that would under cut the rest of the burn. The cigar is short so I stopped trying to control it and just enjoy the thing. Nubbed it.

Burn issue aside it was a good cigar. I'll definitely enjoy smoking them all but wait to see how the other nine burn before buying more. Maybe they need more rest.

Anyone else smoke one of these recently? What did you think?

Re: Mayorga Robusto Maduro

A buddy brought a couple of these over last night.

Very good smoke! Tons of cocoa and coffee flavors. Nicaraguan binder and filler with a Costa Rican wrapper. Delicious.

Checked out the box price and these are $2 sticks! Definitely need to acquire a box of these.

Re: Mayorga Robusto Maduro

I've smoked a bunch of the Hi Octane maduro robustos. I used to really enjoy them. Over the last year or so, they just don't do it for me anymore. Perhaps they don't enjoy their extra cooler time. Very mild cigars and certainly a good value.

I liked the Mayorga maduro toro more than the robustos. But, it has the toughest wrapper known to man. The wrapper is hard to get lit and the cigar requires a lot of touch-ups as it falls behind on a regular basis. But, I really enjoy the flavor on these and they, too, represent a good value.

I purchased a 5pk of the Mayorga Gordito 5x54's from JR's about a month or so ago in EMS, and I really love this cigar. Excellent aroma, good burn w/no touchup, great draw, and tastes really good. A solid medium bodied cigar. I want to purchase a box, but will first need to bump up to a larger humi...

What is your RH in your cooler? I had some burn issues at 69%RH, but they cleared up at 65%.

Re: Mayorga Robusto Maduro

Mayorgas, along with Maria Mancinis and La Rosa Especial are old staples of JR Cigars. These cigars are always available, consistent and cheap. I used to like them in maduro. These were some of the first cigars that I smoked, although they got boring after a while, and I found new types of cigars from new vendors. IIRC they were creamy and flavorful, but one-dimensional. They're a good beginner's cigar.

If you're having trouble with the burn, try dryboxing them for a week. Cbid/CI usually ships their cigars wet, so I usually leave some out to dry off a bit.

You might want to try Victor Sinclair Vintage Select and Astral TVS. Can be had for about $1-$2 on cbid. They have a similar flavor profile IMO.

Re: Mayorga Robusto Maduro

I like these a lot too, the Costa Rican maduro wrapper is one that I find really flavorful, combine that with NIC. tobacco, and a winner is born. Try the gordito torp. and I too experienced burn problems, but def. don't give up on them.
