Rocky Patel The Edge Torpedo Review

Date Tested: 12/12/06

Storage: Cooler, 69 - 72 Deg F. 70% RH

Conditions Tested: 50 Deg. F 48% RH

This cigar is a Torpedo measuring 6 X 52. This series of cigar is made in Honduras using a Nicaraguan Corojo wrapper, Mexican binder and a mix of Nicaraguan and Panamanian filler.

This is a strong cigar. Smoke volume is profuse and flavor is full. The first third of the cigar had a rather strange taste to me, which could be the Mexican and Panamanian tobaccos. I am not real familiar with these, and the flavor profile of this cigar is quite different than most of the Nicaraguan puros that I have been smoking recently.

Draw on this cigar was rather light, as was the fill. The last two thirds of this cigar developed a flavor that, while strong, was none the less pleasing. Scoring was as follows:

Wrapper = 9.0
Cap = 9.0
Fill = 8.0 (Points lost due to light fill)
Smoke = 10.0
Burn = 9.5
Ash = 10.0
Harshness = 8.0 (Some nose harshness at first, then settled to acceptable)
Flavor Quality = 8.0
Flavor Intensity = 9.5
Satisfaction = 8.5

Total Points = 89.5 Grade B+

All in all, I would recommend this cigar for the price.

Your assessment is right on. I like them a bit more than you, and would give them a 9, or A-. Larry.

I would have given them a higher rating also. I have had many of these in both corojo and maduro. They are very good sticks. But, to each his/her own. For example, for me the draw is one of the best things about them, and I haven't evber felt they were underfilled. All in all though they are a good stick.

Re: Rocky Patel The Edge Torpedo

Really the Edge isn't all that powerful. This is one of my favorite cigars of all time. I found the wrapper to beautiful and oily. The cap was exceptional and the burn unbelievable. The best part of the cigar, or any, is the flavor.

The Edge is the most consistant cigar I have ever had.

Re: Rocky Patel The Edge Torpedo

The two Edge torp's I have liked a lot, but they were a little too strong for my tastes. I tried an Edge Lite, and that hit the spot nicely - although it was a little too mild.

I am going to try a couple more Edge torps soon and see how they compare to the Lites now. Thanks for the review.

Dont remember if I sent the corojo or the maduro, but I have come to love the corojo. But gotta love that sticky as glue maduro wrapper.

Re: Rocky Patel The Edge Torpedo

Nice review Punch! I really enjoy the maddy Edge's vs the Corojo, but both are very consistent in construction and flavor. I enjoy these after a nice steak dinner with a sip or so of Maker's Mark!

The truth be told, my next rating of these will likely be a lot higher. This batch had just come in at my local B&M, so this particular stick was pretty fresh. Something tells me that after a couple of months the harshness will go down and flavor will go up. I can imagine this cigar as a full A with some age on it.
