Mac Maduro Hyde Park Review

Cigar: Macanudo Maduro Hyde Park 5 1/2 x 49
Price: $5.65
Location: My newly remodeled storage shack.
Outside Temp: Cool. 45 degrees
Weather: Rain. Rain. And then some more rain.
Started: 12:45 pm
Finish: 1:30 pm
Drink: Coke

A little background: I am a Macanudo virgin. I thought I'd fire up this Maduro cigar since I haven't met a maduro stick I didn't like. This is part of the Create-A-Sampler package that I purchased from Famous Smokes three weeks ago.

Construction: 5/5 This is one smooth looking stick. Not a lot of vein visible, the wrapper looks excellent.
Draw: 5/5
Burn: 5/5 (Even burn all the way. Never needed any correction)
Smoke: 5/5 (Nice thick white smoke)
Ash: 5/5 (Tight. Also probably one of the whitest ash I have seen)
Taste: 3/5

The pre-light draw was excellent. Toast the foot and lit without a problem. The first draw automatically produced lots of smoke. The leathery taste was nice and smooth. I almost gave up on this smoke as the taste pretty much stayed the same until past the halfway point. And then I was rewarded with some nutty taste a little bit of spice. I smoked it until about the last couple of inches were left.

I'm a little disappointed with this one. The taste was fairly bland for the first half of this cigar. I wish I have more time to smoke the second half as that is where most of the flavor started coming out. Am I wrong in saying that this is also a fairly mild one? I thought it was supposed to be medium to full.

Anyway, it's a decent stick. I don't think I will pay what I did for it again as there are other sticks out there for the same price that are better. But if I can find a better deal on it, I would probably keep a couple in my humi.

Thanks for reading.

Good review!! Everything Mac puts out is on the mild side. Even the so-called robust series isn't so robust but not that bad a cigar, imo. I think they are all a little too expensive, though.

I totally agree with you... the Macanduo is a solid cigar, but definitely not worth the price. It's a little bit too pricey, so you are obviously paying for the name. Thanks for the review, I always like in-depth reviews!

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

I agree with all of you guys. Overpriced and too bland. You would expect that maduro pack more punch than what it has. Can't always judge a cigar on looks. Macanudo is one of the first cigars that I gravitated to only because it was a name that I recognized. I quickly moved on to something better!

msad1217, if you are always up for trying new maduros. Give the Sancho Panza Double Maduro a shot if you haven't tried 'em. A great cigar at an oustanding price. (I recommend the Quixote.)

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

I reviewed one of these a while ago and compared the taste to "office coffee that has been on the burner for hours". I was not impressed with the Macanudo Maduro. The Consuegras are much cheaper and better in the Maduro range, IMO.

I also agreed with you that construction, burn, and aroma were absolutely flawless. I just didnt like the taste.

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

Had a Macanudo Hyde Park Natural last night and was going to post a practice review of it. Your review works just as well. The quick summary is it looked like it should have been a much nicer stick than it was. It was mild with a hint of old shoe flavor. Disappointing.

i like these too, and though i've bought 'em in the past, i can't justify the money for them now that i get better stuff for less on the devil site.

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

thanks for the review, personally I think they are fine cigars.

I enjoy all types of sticks even very mild ones... the macanudos tend to be very easy smokes with great construction... but they are very mild, even the maduros... but that's okay with me.

I suspect that most of the cost is the name, but the name is worth something too... so I don't rip on it's mediocre value too much. If it's my own money , I'll buy other stuff... there are plenty of other sticks that give me as much, if not more, satisfaction as a macanudo, for a lot less dough... but, if I'm given one, I wont pass it up.

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

Good review Manny,

Early 80's was the last time I smoked a Macanudo.

From what I remember, they where very mild in strength and flavor and rather one dimensional, possibly gain in depth and character in the last half or third of the cigar.

A fine cigar, of impeccable construction with a wonderful aroma I recognize immediately to this day.

Even though Macanudo cigars are to mild for my taste, I’ve always liked them, and have been wondering how the Hyde Park Maduro rated.

Thanks again,

Dmntd

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

I wish I had seen this review 3 days ago. I picked one of these up because I hadn't tried a Macanudo yet and I can't pass up the chance to try new maduros. There were several other cigars in the same price range that I could have tried. Maybe it will surprise me though. Doesn't sound like it will be bad, just boring.

Re: Mac Maduro Hyde Park

Gotta had it to Mac. You can find 'em in any liquor store yet they manage to keep a premium price/status tag outside of it too. Used to smoke 'em frequently for golf course outings or the odd smoke here and there. There is not a cigar more overpriced IMO (excluding the ultra premiums).
