Natural Egg by Drew Estate Review

Natural Egg by Drew Estate
Size 6" by 42/70/42
Country: Nicaragua
Shape: Perfecto (sort of... see picture)
Price: $10

My friend Shaun brought me an "Egg" to smoke while tailgating at the 2006 Liberty Bowl in Memphis (South Carolina vs Houston). It was consumed immediately following an excellent meal of shish kabobs, venison tenderloin, and Kirin beer, all grilled in the parking lot under the stadium.

I cannot adequately describe this cigar without a picture, so I found this on the Drew Estate website (click to enlarge):

Natural Egg by Drew Estate Review-natural_egg_05.jpg

My Egg had a slightly harsh taste to it, although I couldn't tell if it was due to low quality tobacco or if it was just too "wet" when I smoked it. Regardless, the novelty of this cigar is not so much in its taste, but in the looks we kept getting from other people as they passed by. It took no small amount of skill to keep it evenly lit as it progressed from a cool, weak draw at one end; then to an overpowering smoke machine at the bulb's thickest point; and finally back into a small hot firecracker at the near end of the bulb. Shaun had to attempt multiple re-lights on his Egg, but I was able to get through mine with just one small touch-up.

I have read some reviews of this cigar on the internet that panned it vehemently for its quality, taste, construction, etc. But, c'mon folks, that's like criticizing a James Bond movie for being unrealistic... some things just need to be accepted for what they are. & this cigar succeeds at what it wants to do: it causes people to stare and ask "What the heck are you smoking?"

Re: Natural Egg by Drew Estate

Some pics would have been great! Thanks for the review, I have found that most "conditioned" Drew Estate cigars have a harshness to them, that may have been amplified by the amount of burning surface area as the egg combusted. I always wondered what one of those would smoke like. I dont think I would smoke one though (except at a herf as a DARE! )

Very good review.

I find Egg and Medusa by Drew Estate interesting, still not sure if I'd buy/smoke them.

Davidoff use to make the Special 'C' also a Culebra shaped cigar.

I keep thinking about buying a couple just to have.

I bought one of those once just for the novelty value.

A nice enough smoke, but on the whole, I think I prefer smoking tobacco.

As for the (Dog's) Egg, I'd steer clear.

Haha i did the same thing. turns out i should have just scrolled down and saw your picture. haha.

One thing i do some about Drew Estates though, is that they do try to make really interesting and different cigars. I really really like the Idea of tobaccos from other parts of the world and using pipe'ish tobacco, i just kind of wish on thoughs he would downplay the seetness a little bit. Maybe i'm just a bit younger, but i enjoy that he's trying to make a unique and new product in a business that is based on a main single way and tradition. Haven't tried too many of his cigars, but i love the look and packaging of some of them.

Re: Natural Egg by Drew Estate

I have heard that the Culebra (cigars bundled together) came about as a way of rations for workers in cigar factories back in the day. They would get 3 cigars a day and they would come twisted and tied together like the Culebra. Don't know if it is true, but it makes sense!
