My First Ashton VSG- Tres Mystique Review

Well today was nice.

I tried my luck at preparing Persian style Chicken Kabobs. Turned out very well. Great lunch.

It was a weird day today in Houston. It was around 65 degrees and sunny. One day before a cold front.

I went to the backyard and sat in the sunshine. First I snipped a Padron 64th Anniversary- it was gonna be my first. Pre-light draw....almost totally plugged. Gonna let that one sit.

Grabbed the VSG Tres Mystique. Great, oily, toothy wrapper. Clipped it and it had a great draw. Lit with ease with my new Solo Lighter.

First draws were a nice, "bready" tobacco flavour. No harshness and no bitterness.

I grabbed a glass of water and turned on DJ Cam's Mad Blunted Jazz and enjoyed the backyard and plants.

The Ashton burned quite nice and put out a good amount of blue-grey smoke.

The flavour was not as complex as many reviews had hinted at. Stayed a nice, spicy, earthy tobacco flavour.

It was definently a good cigar and it burned cool all the way through. Spiced up more in the last third as most cigars do.

Was it worth the price? I'm not sure. I have a box of Bolivar Coronas Juniors coming in from the darkside. They run a few bucks less than the VSG. We'll see how those stack up and we'll see. I'm sure I can gain the same enjoyment out of cigars costing less. I was hoping this cigar would have some sort of very unique flavour that would make me come back for more, but unfortunately it did not. I will pick up a few at some point though I'm sure.

Great review!

I am questioning myself if they are worth the price. The first I had was lousy, the second was pretty good. I'll have to try round three!

Yeah, 8.25 at my BM. http://www.seriouscigars.com/types/B...ton&Cat=Cigars

Once again, probably not quite worth the 8.25 but I may revisit them some other time.

Now...I just hope my Padron Anni loosens up in a month.

you should grab yourself a pair if the draw tools next run they make, until then you should find something similar, maybe a small kabob rod, cleaned of course

Re: My First Ashton VSG- Tres Mystique

I prefer the really long and thin VSGs. I cant remember the name,
Local shop only charges a few dollars more... so it seems to be the better bargin. Infact, thats almost always the case with premium cigars.
If im already spending say, 8 dollars for a robusto that will last me 45min, i may as well pay 11 dollars and get the same cigar in a nice torpedo, or churchill size that will smoke for a good 2 hours! Were paying by the hour here folks

(damn them and their marketing tactics.... they get me every time. For example.
it costs 1.49 for a 20oz soda, but a 1.5 liter bottle costs 1.39... WTF is up with that? i dont want to drink 1.5L of soda, ill be a diabetic before im 30 at that rate....)

Thanks for the review, I am not the biggest fan of the vsgs as well.

Good review; I run hot and cold on the entire Ashton line, VSGs in particular. Thinking that one day I'll come around to them...but the darkside is strong

Re: My First Ashton VSG- Tres Mystique

I'm a big fan of the VSG line but, that said, I think your review of them as having a rather simple earthy, tobacco flavor is spot on. I've smoked tons of these and have never thought of them as overly complex. I don't hold that simplicity against them though, not every stick has to bring 10 different flavors to the table IMHO. On the other hand, for the price, you better really like the flavors it does present.

Thanks for the review!

Re: My First Ashton VSG- Tres Mystique

I keep Sorcerors, Corona Gordas and Enchantment at all times, these cigars really get better with a little cedar time. They are among my all time favorites second only to OpusX and my beloved Monte 2 isom. Every now and then, the VSG's can burn a little off, but give them another try, when you smoke a great one, it is truly great.

See,

I did like it, as I said. But I think I was expecting something different because many reviews described it as complex.

Thanks for the info bro.

To the others, thanks for the comments and I will pick one of these up sometime.

And Muziq, I agree, the darkside IS strong!
