Review: Consuegra – No. 72 Robusto RM

Consuegra – No. 72 Robusto RM (5.0 x 54)
http://www.jrcigars.com/index.cfm?pa...itemcode=CG723
Wrapper: HON Binder: HON Filler: DR/HON/NIC

1)Look: Chocolate brown wrapper, dry, some with fine crystalline specks. The construction was lumpy and uneven, giving it a rustic appearance.

2)Pre-lit Aroma: mild tobacco to non-descript

3)Feel: smooth and dry – silky on the ones with the crystals. The 54 ring on this is larger than most robustos and it gave it another dimension of character.

4)Finger Roll: solid to soft, but none had that spongy feel.

5)Draw: smooth and easy with lots of smoke – some had almost no resistance

6)Lit Aroma: nothing special but not offensive

7)Strength: mild to full (these cigars varied quite a bit cigar to cigar)

Taste: I am not very good at picking out flavors. This cigar had nothing special, or noteworthy about the palate.

9)Ash: flakey, but firm grey

10)Finish After-taste: Again, nothing special, but not unpleasant.

11)Bottom Line: This is a value cigar, coming in at about $1.05 a cigar. Over the last couple of weeks I have smoked about 10, right out of the box from JR – they were on the dry side, but not unsmokeable. These cigars varied from each other quite a bit. It was like dipping into a Whitman chocolate sampler, you never knew what filling was inside. This is probably due to them being, “the bundled segundos and production overruns”. The construction was always decent, only complaint was that a couple of the cigars had a really light draw so that the smoke was too hot for my liking. These are cheap value cigars. Decent enough to have a place in the humidor for those occasions where your attention is not focused on the pleasure of a fine cigar.

I have found the Consuegra's are okay at best OTT. With some age (6 months - 2 years) they turn out to be a better smoke. I have some cg733 and cg84 with age on them and find them pretty darn good for an inexpensive cigar.

Give most bundles/seconds at least 6 months before smoking them.

Connies are very good 6 months later and will amaze you at around 2 years.
