PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild Review

Habanos vs. Non Habanos

Not really a fair fight, but I smoked a Cuban PSD4 last night followed by a Honduran Camacho SLR Rothschild. Both cigars are equal in size (Robustos) and construction. Cost is double for the Partagas Series D4. I figured I'd do this review in the non Habanos section because of the Puros nature of the Habanos Forum.

First the PSD4. I love this robusto size and the construction seemed above standard for Cuban. Cut it, the wrapper held tight and the spongy leafs bounced right back to the proper ring size. A very well put together product, the pre light draw was phenominal, I could taste the peppery almost menthol like leaf begging me to light it. I do not know what I can add to all the reviews of this fine cigar other than it has the unique ability to taste like chocolate, spice and coffee on each and every puff. Super easy draw, just the right twang and a subtle buzz to ease into the night with, burnt my fingers.

I will have to say though, the Camacho SLR is a very good cigar too. The construction and size were identical, right down to the pre-light draw. Camacho's have there own kind of mix, slightly sweet with a hint of pepper, but not quite as potent as the PSD4. As I went down to the 2nd half of the SLR it gained momentum in strength w/o being harsh nor bitter. This is a fine cigar IMO that never quite opens up like the PSD4, yet it does not let me down in anyway. It had hints of coffee and cocoa, just not as bold as the Cuban. The Camacho SLR I smoked was about 2+ years old. I Highly reccomend both stogies, the PSD4 will put a smile on your face and the Camacho will too, just not quite as wide.

PSD4; rate it 9.1
Camacho SLR Rothschild; rate it 8.8

Both cigars were firing on all 12 cylinders, great night of smoking!

Re: PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild

Nice review on both smokes Dave! Always hard to compare the leafs from two different areas. I think you did a very nice job on both smokes. I always liked the PSD4 but I haven't had a lot of luck with them lately, but the good ones have been wonderful.
The SLRs I need to try. A lot of the guys over at CW have been very impressed with them, both the Rothchild and the Churchill, and also the Torpedo. I see a box or two in my future. Their reviews agree with yours. They seem to like them more than the Corojos.

Hurry up and get to Post # 1000. I think you are supposed to send everone a good smoke when you get there.

I got to remind Mo about that too!

Re: PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild

Great reviews. I have not had much luck with the D4's lately either. I love the Partagas brand, but I think there are better robustos out there.

Re: PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild

uh... every camacho i've had, including the very one your reviewed here, has tasted like charred dirt to me. i can not get past the overly earthy/dirty flavors of these camacho's... matter of fact, the 4 of them i've had (yes, i remember it's been 4) have been so bad, i haven't even come close to smoking through half the cigar.

now, i know a lot of people like their flavor, but i never will. it is truely one of the most disgusting cigars i've had (but still far behind the don diego reserva line - which is ass-hair, dirt, and charcoal mixed into a wrapper).

oh, i just finished my box of PSD4s last week, and the first few i had were excellent... then they've been just a little above average. but i'd take them any day above a camacho. man, i was so when i took someone recommendation on these and bought a few. i bought the regular line and the slr's... both were equally nasty.

sorry about this, i know a ton of people love these cigars... but i tell ya what, you can't give me one now...
sorry again, as you can tell, i really have had bad experiences with these cigars, and honestly, it's what has led me to cuban cigars (cuz their "earthy" taste is nothing like a camacho/don diego, etc.).

I don't think Greg likes the Camachos!

Always enjoy his "anti" reviews, so descriptive and subtle!!

i should've stated that i'd take JUST ABOUT ANYTHING over the camacho's (an onyx, henry clay, helix, consuegra, astral, etc). when people talk about corojo wrapped cigars, and people always mention camacho's, i shake my head.
i personally like the Trilogy Authentic Corojo line over anything Camacho makes.

and i'm seriously not trying to be a jerk about this, cuz evidently, i'm one of the few that does not like this brand, but to me, they have been downright nasty.

hey, if i find a cigar shop down by ft. stewart, GA here next month, i might pick one up. maybe my tastes have changed and i like dirty-ashy flavors, who knows.

Re: PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild

I think it's just a taste thing. To me the Opus X tastes like monkey butt dingleberries (don't ask, don't tell), hence I'll take just about any other domestic out there. But I consider myself lucky because Fuente wants more $$$ than most isoms cost for a box.

Camacho is making some good cigars lately, but if you do not like the profile, don't buy them. I have smoked a several of the standard corojo line and enjoyed them just fine, the same can be said for the Havana line.

The past year I've purchased the 07/05's, a 46/50/38 by 6" figurado that previously was available only as a special blend for company co founder Christian Eiroa....the 07/05 actually is a little grassy at light up then turns to what can be descrbed as earthy, but I'm getting many more flavors and depth than that. It opens up more than the other corojos, XLNT IMHO.

I would be remiss to not mention one of my favorite new cigars is the Camacho SLR Maduro, one note smoke, but a very good one note !...I've had only a few of them and a B/O box is coming, when it gets here I'll shoot you out a couple w/ some 07/05's Greg. If you don't like them, no big to me, just want to make sure you try them all.

Camacho is working on your taste though, today they announced a Camacho Cameroon will arrive in October. Next year another cigar is coming out called tha Camacho Scorpio...I'm vague on the details other than it is at least 3 years old when put on sale, they've been rolled and are aging now. rns

Just so you don't think I'm nuts, I'd never pass up a PSD4 first. I've only smoked one "off" PSD4, the one in my review is '03. I've smoked another last night from the seleccion robusto 5 pack....it was fantastic.

I think the "off" PSD4 I smoked this summer was from the same 03 box, but the others have been fine to great. It was a dissapointment because of expectations, but in reality still a good cigar, just not as sharp as the others.

Re: PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild

dave, thanks for the offer, but you don't have to.

side note - the contstruction/burn of the camachos has been great on the ones i've had...
and like i said, a TON more people like them than dislike them (i also dislike the famed cuban cohiba robusto - haven't had a good one yet).

The Opus X is the only Domestic that tastes good to me. The Opus Robusto is a nice cigar with a little age. Definately overpriced and not as good as most Cubans that are on though. I don't care for the Padron taste at all. Just finished a 4 pack sampler of the 1926, and I'm not impressed at all for 15.00 a cigar. I'll try anything once. I wouldn't mind trying the Camacho after your review, for a golf course smoke. I hate to smoke a Cuban on the course, just don't enjoy it or the aroma as much.

Re: PSD4 vs. Camacho SLR Rothchild

Good review RNS. I was driving back to school and stopped at the indian reservation on the way (tax free gas and tobacco). They have NY's largest walk-in there, but its usually jammed with Ashtons and Macanudos. I stopped in and what do I see, but the SLR Maduro. I could hear RNS's keyboard nagging me to try it, so I grabbed a couple. I used to smoke the Camacho SLRs quite a bit when the first came out, but got away from them for some reason (I think construction issues). Ive also had the H2000 (I think) wrapped Camachos, which was the worst cigar Ive ever had. So I figured Id give Camacho another chance, and I was not disappointed. Good smoke and thanks for the suggestion RNS.
