Camacho Coyolar - Torpedo Review
Details
Origin: Danli, Honduras Wrapper: Honduras Binder: Honduras Filler: Honduras Size: 6"x54 Pre-Light The wrapper on this was a beautiful milk chocolate color. Very smooth to the touch with only one noticeable vein. I clipped it with my Xikar, and it went through fairly smoothly. I felt a bit of resistance. Once the end was off, I saw why. A fairly large stem was there, in the middle of the cigar. Pre-Light draw was perfect for me. Fairly firm, but not plugged. (even with the giant stem) Lighting The cigar lit fairly easily, even though I was using a butane table torch in the daylight and I had no idea where the end of the flame was. First Third of Cigar Well initial flavors I got were black pepper, with a light tobacco taste. The smoke was rather creamy on the palette. This is kinda weird, but I definately picked up on a dried leaf taste (well how dried leaves smell at least) 2nd Third The pepper seemed to simmer down here. Another weird taste occurred to me...root beer. If anyone has ever tasted Sasparilla root, than its more like that. Not sugary sweet, but a neat flavor. I'll have to smoke another to see if its there again. Also noted here, I picked up a pretty big tobacco buzz. Felt it hard in my stomach. This puppy is strong! Last Third The tastes intensified in the last part of the cigar. The "root beer" flavor was short lived, and the pepper and leather came back full force. Overall Burn This cigar burned very well. Ash was flaky at some spots, but could still hold on for an inch or two before falling off. Cigar was very smoky, even when idle, and produced very dense smoke...perfect for smoke rings. The stem protruded out the foot of the cigar when I was finished, but didnt' seem to impede the burn or affect flavor. (not that I'd know anyway as this was my first Coyolar) Conclusion Well, as I really had no idea about this cigar, other than a recommendation from DWSC (I think Dale said this was one of his fav's) I was really in for a surprise for how strong it was. I wasn't expecting that at all. After I smoked this I find that its composed of all Ligero leaf, so that would explain it. I wish I would've eaten before I smoked this, I probably would've enjoyed it more. But I'd assume anyone who enjoys strong, full-bodied smokes would like this cigar. I believe it retails for under $6, but I got a 5 pack on the Devil Sight for much less than that.

Re: Camacho Coyolar - Torpedo
Very nice thorough reveiw. I've only had a couple of these and they are strong I much prefer the corojo series. You know Camacho was originally going to name these Say Uncle due to the power they had.

Re: Camacho Coyolar - Torpedo
Heh... I smoked one of these Sunday as was considering doing a review on it as well.
Comparing notes: I definitely got the same flavors as you did, although I couldn't put my finger on the "root beer" one. Looking back on it, I guess that's what it was, but I couldn't really define it when it hit. No veins or stems in mine, although it didn't burn very well. It ended up tunneling on me, as the wrapper just didn't seem to want to burn as quickly as the filler. After a couple of corrections, I ended up just ditching it, probably about 2/3 smoked, but definitely not nubbed out. Oh, and I didn't really get any kick out of it at all. Honestly, it seemed kinda gentle to me. Not nearly the kick that I got out of a similar Corojo last week. |

Re: Camacho Coyolar - Torpedo
Thanks for the great review! Have had a number of Camachos but do not think I have tried the Coyolar line yet. All the Camachos are on the strong side, which I like! Have to give them a try.

Re: Camacho Coyolar - Torpedo
I had one of these last night. It was actually a Super Toro (6.0 x 54 I think). That peppery kick I got right after lighting it was outstanding. I knew it was gonna be a strong cigar right from the beginning. It seemed to mellow out a bit in the middle. The only complaint I have is a somewhat uneven burn, but this has been happening to a lot of my cigars recently, so it might be a storage problem.
I will certainly try more of these in the future. I still have 3 left sitting in the humidor. |

Re: Camacho Coyolar - Torpedo
If you find the Coyolar too overpowering (as well as the diploma) you should consider the Camacho Corojo monarca...a great full-flavored stick without the ligero kick...price isn't bad either.
