Padron Anniversary 1964 Maduro Principe Review

First of all Im going to mix up these with the El Principe (San Cristobal de La Habana.) Im going to call them El Principe sometimes and Principe some other times.

I heard so much good about these, reading the top25cigar (where it was at the top), and all so I just had to try it. For a long time I wanted to try these. I started to smoke and it was good. A full bodied strong cigar with dark coffee (a bit dark chocolate), spicy flavour. Very complex I think for a non-cuban... The first bit I thought like this:"Well this was good but not that good... a 4.0-4.1 out of 5.0 cigar, but the second half it started to get a lot better... Wow... I really enjoyed this cigar... This is probably the best non-cuban cigar Ive ever smoked... perhaps even better than some cubans... The bad part is that Im still have a bit of cold... little strange feeling in the throat and so on... (BTW, Its typical when I get to smoke a good cigar that Im not feeling 100% good , look at the Cohiba Robusto-review BTW.) Well, Im actually considering to have another cigar today even though Im not 100% well... I just need one OK?

4.0-4.5 out of 5.0

PS. My first Padron Anniversary 1964 Maduro BTW, and second Padron. The first Padron was Delicias... DS

Do yourself a favour and try one of the Natural Wrapper Anniversarios. I tend to think they are even more cuban-like than the maduro versions. And if you can find a natural wrapper Serie 1926, well then, I think you'll be even more impressed.

I've found myself presented with a great cigar and a nasty cold on more than one occasion.

Thanks for the input! I shall look for the ones with natural wrapper... but as I understand its already hard to get them in the US.

Re: Padron Anniversary 1964 Maduro Principe

Here in Virginia, the maduro 64s seem to be getting more and more available while The Naturals are getting rarer and rarer. The only natural wrapper 1926 I've seen came directly from Rudy Padron himself when my wife stopped by the factory in Miami on my behalf.

It's funny. I'm currently finishing off a dud of 64 anniversario (a Monarca) as I type this. It's probably the first bad PAdron I've smoked.

I was looking for nats myself a week ago and couldn't find them, although there were a plethora of maduros. Paying list is tough when I can find other smokes in that price range and much cheaper I really like.

Agreed. While, IMO, the Padron Anniversery line are really good cigars the price is just not justified. There are too many good cigars on the market that are much less expensive. Of course, I'm a cheap-ass.....

Padron also makes gift packs [5 pack of the '64 (N & M) and 4 pack of the '26] that you can buy to sample the different sizes. Famous, Holt's, and Thompson's should have some of these packs available right now since this is the holiday shopping season. You may have to call to find out.

BTW Rey, if you're interested in getting some but they won't ship to Sweden, let me know, I'll see what I can do from here.

I really liked the construction of the cigar and the box was very beautiful made too...

You and IHT and your Cuban Utopia!

I have only had 6 ISOM cigars, so I am no expert. Then again I have only had 3 Padron Anniversarios. That said I would take a PAM over a Cuban if given the choice anyday.

I love the Principe in particular. They can be found for $180/box online which I believe is similar to the price of mainstream ISOMs (from my limited knowledge of that market).

I passed up on some Padrón 40th Anniversary Series cigars today, too damned expensive! (although I did blow $60 on 6 cigars today; AF Hemmi Maduro and AF Anejos)

I just smoked my very first PAM 64 and it almost kicked my butt. Great strenght, awesome flavor, superb draw, excellent construction and burn. Very well worth the 13 dollars I paid.

Re: Padron Anniversary 1964 Maduro Principe

I enjoyed a Principe tonite. Not much to add to Rey's review, a nice complex, spicey, enjoyable smoke . Went great with a 2000 Barossa "The Holy Trinity", a smooth blended Aussie red from S. Australia. Draw was a bit tight, but it still produced copious amounts of rich, flavorful smoke.

I have two at home right now. A 1964 Torpedo and a either a 1964 Diplimatico or "A" I'm not exactly sure because they were sent to me by my Aunt and Uncle for Christmas. Those and two huge SLR Serie R's.

I've had the Principe. I bought it because of the name, SCdH El Principe is one of my favorite TPCs. I thought that it was a really good cigar. And I look forwards to the others that I have. Would I compare these to a cuban, no. Why, because they are a different kind of cigar. I know this might sound bad, but a cubans a cuban and a domestic is a domestic. We don't compare the taste of an apple to our favorite orange. Right????

All that being said. Besides the cost of these, which IMHO is too high, there is no reason why I wouldn't have a box or two of the 1964 PAMs around. They are much better then the 1926s that I've had. Better then Opus also.

But, I prefer the taste and complexity of a cuban. The smooth draw, the creaminess of the smoke. The pepper and chocolate flavors of a PSD4. The floral hints with cocoa and that cuban earthiness of a JL#2. I have nothing against PAMs or PANs.......none. I just prefer Cubans (because I'm an elitist ). Matt prefers Domestics. We all have our own preferences, thats what makes this board so great. Personally I'd rather smoke a domestic then a Mag46. Never been a fan of them. Just not my type of cigar.

Nice review...I was turned on to the Padrons by a few of the BOTL's here and I have to say they have become a deffinate favorite.

BTW, thanks to "friendoofop" for the Padron selection in the PIF.
