Occidental Reserve Double Broadleaf Maduro Review

Measures 4 7/8 x 50
Wrapper: Ecuadorian Connecticut Broadleaf Maduro
Binder: Connecticut Broadleaf
Filler: Cubano, San Vicente, Indonesian and Olor tobaccos
Origin: Dominican Republic
Strength: Medium
Shape: Robusto

This is my first review on this board so I hope it comes off well. I sat down last night with one of these and a Yuengling Lager and this is my thoughts

Pre Light: I punch cut most all of my cigars as I smoke primarily 50 rings and I don't have a good cutter. The pre light draw was very easy and the taste was a slightly chocolately.

Lighting: I toasted the foot and lit the cigar with my Colibri firebird lighter.

First 2/3: The cigar produced a good amount of smoke and the smoke had a nice creamy taste. It also had a nice greyish/white ash that was about 2 inches when it finally fell off. The taste was very consistant for the first 2/3's and had hints of chocolate, cedar, and medium tobacco flavors.

Last 1/3: The last third of this cigar was a whole different story. This cigar became rank and almost unsmokeable. I had to puff three or four times everytime to keep it lit and doing this made the smoke very hot and this increased the rank flavor.

Overall Impression: Overall I liked this cigar up to the last 1/3 and I can only hope that I got a bad one and that this is not an overall problem with this brand. I still have a couple in the humi as this came from a 3-pack so I think I will let them sit for a little while and try another one down the road.

Good, solid review!! And you bring a good point to light: Some cigars are "nubbers," others aren't. When you stop enjoying a stick, it's time to set it down.

Boobar, I'm interested in whether you noticed the double maduro - both wrapper and binder. I tend toward maduros, but never smoked a double.

Nice review -- and congrats on pairing the cigar with a nice Pennsylvania beer!

Now I don't feel so bad about putting it down. Sometimes I feel that I spend $3.00 to $5.00 on a cigar I hate to waste it.

I didn't really notice a significant difference from the other maduros that I have smoked but I am still a newbie and I may have missed some of the subtle differences.

As I said before I still have a couple in the humi and I will revisit this one later down the road, hopefully with different results.

These are a great under the radar "value priced" cigar.

Nice review BTW!

I used to think the same thing and would force myself to finish a cigar because I paid for it...then I saw a quote on here from a more experienced BOTL. He said (paraphrasing) "I didn't pay to force myself to smoke something I don't like. If I don't enjoy it, I put it down." Sometimes it is worth the money you paid to not have to smoke the rest!

Thanks for the great first review.
