AF....Bland and Harsh Review

This review is on a Arturo Fuente Chateau Cuban Belicoso Sun Grown

I have had this in the Humi for a few weeks now stabilizing. It was bad from the light up. Pre light smell was GREAT, cut was one of th best Ive had...NO little scraps or dusty crap. Pre light draw was perfect. Lit up very hard, burned uneven the hole way through, and wanted to go out the whole time. I am not an overly slow draw taker, about every minute or so sometimes shorter if its a great cigar, sometimes longer if it is burning well and a strong one.

Taste was the same the whole way through strong leather and cedar. I put it out a little past the halfway mark and don't regret it. The ash was however great, nice and white and stayed on till about the halfway mark.

You may want to give these another chance.
This is one of my favorites from the Fuente line.

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

Looking at the half smoked cigar in my ashtray I should add

This is my favorite shape to smoke and almost a perfect ring gauge. So I was even more dissapointed in it. The wrapper also started to split in 2 different spots right before I hit the halfway mark.

I MAY try this one again.........

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

was the cedar and leather objectionable or was it the bad burn/propensity of going out that caused you to ditch it ?

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

Fuentes are not immune to an occasional bad one. I usually found the sun growns to be their best, along with the Don Carlos.

I have found that sun growns as with corojo wrapped cigars smoke best at a lower RH, usually around 65%

Try another one.
You will NOT be dissapointed.

Some Fuentes are even good enough to see fakes.

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

Try another one. I've had this same cigar and while it wasn't my favorite ever, it was pretty good. Fuente's rarely have bad construction and draw, but it happens to all companies. Most will burn excellent. Maybe dry box one for a couple hours before smoking next time!

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

I agree with BostonBull. I had a fiver of Sun Grown Belicosos in my humi for 2 months and I decided to light one up. Wasn't really impressed with the flavor. Just didn't suit my tastes. Tried two more at later dates and still the same results (gave the other two away). Perhaps the fiver was bad or it was stored in poor conditions. I haven't bought any since. I guess I'll try it again if gifted to me. Otherwise there are so many other Fuentes I know I enjoy that I'd rather stick to the lines I love.

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

I hope you try this one again! This is the only SunGrown from fuente that I really, really enjoy. Otherwise I stick to the Fuente Maduros which have always delivered fantastically, sweet, smooth smokes, with the occasional bitter buildup towards to end of the cigar. Maybe try again and write another review! Thanks for taking the time to write this one and I hope the next one is better for you

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

I am not a fan of this one as well. I actually tried my first one the other night and was not impressed.

I can honestly say I am not a huge fan of most Fuentes and really only like the anejos and the opusX. There is something about most Dominican Republic tobacco that just doesn't do it for me.

With that said, I got a Chateau Fuente SG in a box pass and was pleasantly surprised (I had pretty low expectations from my past experiences, but still wanted to give one a try). It did not have that typically flavor I dislike with most Fuentes (including the hemingways and the don carlos). I was actually pretty excited to smoke the Cuban Belicoso, but at least for me, it was not nearly as good as the Chateau Fuente SG. I actually put mine out after about a 1/3 of the cigar.

Honestly, even though the Chateau SG was a pretty good cigar (especially considering the price), I don't think I would ever buy a box of these. Just not my bag baby! Of course, I should mention I don't like short stories either, so take my opinion with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the review.

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

I will try another one, in the same size. As it is my favorite shape to hold in my mouth. The tatse was an issue also. ALL leather and cedar, it never changed only intensified.

Ill give it one more shot next time I am at the B&M.

Re: AF....Bland and Harsh

Also dabbling with the Fuente SGs. I had one great Chateau and one that was off but am going to have some rest for a while before revisiting. Someone suggested aging for 6 months first.
