The Edge Torpedo Maduro- Rocky Patel Review
This is my first CS review and it's a little long, so bear with me-
The first one I smoked, I didn’t even know the name of it, just that it was a Rocky Patel product. They were in a rustic-looking box of 100 on the shelf below the new R.P. Sungrowns that I was actually interested in. (Great cigar, by the way, but that’s a separate review.) The Edge caught my eye because it was a large box and they were unbanded, so I didn’t know what they were, but when I picked up a stick, I was struck by how freakin’ oily the wrapper was. It actually felt slick to the touch, much like a LGC Serie R Maduro, though a little lighter shade. Perfect construction. This thing smelled WONDERFUL. So I picked up the Maduro Torpedo as well a few Sungrowns and brought them to their new home. The Sungrowns were really good, but I almost forgot about the Edge and didn’t smoke it for over a week. When I did, I was BLOWN AWAY. I was enjoying it so much, I didn’t think to write any notes. The next day, I was at the shop as they opened and made a bee-line to the R.P/I.T. case and grabbed a handful of The Edge, this time making sure I asked what this cigar was. That evening, I did something I never do. I smoked one without letting it rest in my humidor for a couple of days. So that sets the stage for a proper review: The pre-light impression is the same as the first one I had. This thing just LOOKS like it’s gonna taste good. When I lit it up, what really got me was that there was NO initial harshness. Almost every cigar, no matter how good it is, tastes rough to me for the first few puffs. This one, nada. It is a well-balanced taste of vanilla-like creaminess and spice. Let there be no mistake- this is a full bodied cigar, with ligero being in the filler blend and giving it a kick in the butt, however it is not overpowering or harsh at all. The draw was excellent and it produced copious amounts of smoke. At one inch, the smoothness rounded out and the spiciness became more complex, with a peppery flavor I find in some Nicaraguan cigars. After two inches, the spiciness increased, but never overpowered the creamy flavor. At this point, I tapped off the ash and it left a perfect cone of embers. The burn was razor-straight. At 3 inches burned, the spice tapered off a little and cedar flavor came on. (It sometimes bugs me when I see “Cedar” in a review, because no sh*t… they’re stored in a cedar box 24/7, but I had to include it in this instance, because the flavor was only present at this stage of the cigar.) At this point, my wife, who had been totally absorbed in annihilating Helgast soldiers on PS2 Killzone, paused the game and asked “What are you smoking? That smells wonderful.” Totally unsolicited, it was. I told her what it was, I mentioned that they’re $5 a stick, and she said “Well you’re just going to have to get some more.” Is that cool or WHAT? Back to the cigar… With less than two inches left, the peppery spiciness returned and replaced the cedar and this baby was still smooth as silk. I did not have to purge this cigar at all. I can’t remember the last time that was the case even with high-end sticks, at least when they get down to nub territory, but nope, not once with this one. I was forced to lay it down when it was burning my fingers and I couldn’t find the electronics tweezers that I sometimes use to skewer a particularly good cigar that has reached nub status. Folks, if you find out that your local shop has any of these in- run, don’t walk there and buy as many as your wallet will allow. They are selling at my shop quicker than anything except Opus X, and Padron Annis. And it’s all by word of mouth amongst the regulars. There were absolutely no negatives about The Edge (Well, except maybe for the name… a little hokie for me.) I’d say this is a personal top-5. Hands down. The Edge Rocky Patel Maduro Torpedo 6X52

Re: The Edge Torpedo Maduro- Rocky Patel
Well your review inspired me to pick up one at the shop yesterday. Although the stick had some of that vegetable smell the '92 Patels do, I figure I will give the stick a month or two on timeout and give it a shot. I gotta say I like the price of these better than the 90 and 92 Patels. I also grabbed one of the new Sungrowns in a corona -ish size.

Re: The Edge Torpedo Maduro- Rocky Patel
Very good review. Your review inspired me to pick up a 5-pack. I got my 5-pack in the mail yesterday. I will let them sit for about a month and then give them a shot. I will post my thoughts on this thread as well.
Good Job.

Re: The Edge Torpedo Maduro- Rocky Patel
I had one of these last night from the box spilt :
http://www.clubstogie.com/vb/showthr...highlight=edge I have to agree with Q's review except for the fact I didn't detect any creaminess in the cigar, but then I never have, maybe I can't detect creaminess. And the cedar is a sweet cedar, not distasteful, but enjoyable, and it comes on quickly. The cigar is very firm and solid, nicely so and there was a slight saltiness to the taste which I enjoyed. THX Q and FPorcini. ![]()
