La Aurora Preferidos Tubo Maduro Ruby Review

I wanted something that wouldn’t take too long as its raining on and off here and I wouldn’t want to be standing in the rain smoking so I pulled out my La Aurora Preferidos Tubo Maduro Ruby. The shape of this cigar (think a double ended torpedo) makes me think of cigars as they are drawn in cartoons. That and opening such a hulking tube and pulling out something so minimal is a little strange. That affects my grade on the appearance but its otherwise nice a fantastic looking beast of a cigar. Dark and oily, smooth with some veins and interesting to look at says it all.

It makes you want to impersonate James Cagney or Edward G.

The prelight smell on this stick is pretty good but nothing about it jumps out at you. It lights super easy because the foot is only about a quarter inch across. The stick smokes a lot on the draw and none at all any other time. I mean typically I double pull a stick to get my smoke but this one gives you a mouthful with only a lazy half pull. I was also worried because the stick is pretty solid and your head is not to large but I shouldn’t have been. By far this was the easiest pulling stick for me ever.

The flavors are coffee like, with some woodsy tastes and a sweet undercurrent. Not a sweet you can put your fingers on and not overly sweet but definitely a nice sweet tone the whole way thru. The smoke however is floral in nature, at least to me. It picks up the slightest hints of spice as it goes into the middle and end. Its medium in body but very full on flavor. I think it’s a great stick tho I did find myself thinking what the stick might be like with a wrapper other than madro.

It falls down on value just a bit, I’d love more stick for the $18 I shelled out on it but it delivers the goods once you light it up. Definitely the picturesque tube drives the price up and I think this would make a good gifter/bomber for that reason even if it wasn’t so good. On other note on the tube, this thing has been out of the humi for a week and smoked perfectly so it is worth something!

Appearance – 8
Construction – 10
Flavor – 10
Value – 7
Overall Experience -9
Overall Grade – 8.8

Final Verdict – A very good cigar; one I think would be excellent in a puff puff pass situation. I just wish there was more of it.

Excellent review. I'm curious, how long did this cigar burn for you? The preferido I smoked a few weeks ago burned for nearly 2 hours. Granted I was nursing it, because I was really enjoying each pull. That and the fact that I nubbed it. It really was a great cigar for me.

Nice review. I love the La Aurora Preferidos. You can get them without the tubes for a little under $10 each (by the box) or around $11 each (5-pack) at CI. The Ruby is the same as the #2 maduro.

I was planning to ask my B&M about that tomorrow morning. But I'm still planning to pick up 10 or so of these for when the B52's take to the air or when the nieghbor makes his kid cut my yard for a month as a punishment.

Great review; sounds like a great smoke.
I've been wanting to test one of these for myself for ages now.

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Tubo Maduro Ruby

I picked one up at LC&P when we were up there for Jenn. She didn't like it . So I traded her my Vegas 5 for it and I loved it!! Really good flavor and great draw. I burned my fingers nubbin it!!

I do agree about the value though. Nice pretty tube, but @$18/smoke, not my daily go to.

I'm heading over to the B&M in a bit, going to check and see if they have these in the non tubo.

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Tubo Maduro Ruby

I've got two of the platinums that I'm saving for when a buddy moves to FL in one month.

As mentioned, they have the same things without the tubes for a lot less.

Re: La Aurora Preferidos Tubo Maduro Ruby

Thanks for the great review... A few months back I picked up some of these on cbid for a friend. I have been lucky enough to try a couple & they are definitely a great cigar. It sounds like I experienced a little more spice towards the end than you, but it was not overpowering. If you are looking for a little more bang for your buck I would suggest seeking out the #1s...
