Thumbs up Ashton VSG Tres Mystique Review

I tried my first VSG last night, so I thought I'd post a thread and share my thoughts.

This was a smaller cigar. I'm not an expert in cigar forms but I'd put it in the marvela category.

First of all it's construction was quite good. It had very few veins in the wrapper and had a nice natural color wrapper. However it was not as oily as I had pictured. To the touch it was a bit on the spongy side.

I use a circular punch to reveal what it had bottled up (a 30/30 shell works nice)

The pre-light draw was quite good. My initial reaction was that it would not be stingy with the smoke. With a quick touch of the Nibo Space lighter (tripple torch....a bit extreme for a 42 ring??? You tell me )

Initially it started out spicy revealing various flavors. This lasted probably for the first third. After this it started becoming more overpowering, so I had trouble enjoying the flavors. This lasted for the rest of the way down. I really think my sense of taste was just inundated. Don't get me wrong it still left my palette with good flavors just not very distinguishable ones. I smoked it to the nub and the finish was pretty good.

By the way the atmosphere did not hurt my review on this one. I was able to enjoy it in the hot tub looking at as ky full of God's gorgeous twinklers!

Re: Ashton VSG Tres Mystique Review

These are good cigars...some of the only NC cigars I still smoke. The Tres Mystique is 4.375 x 44 and is listed as a Perfecto on the top25 review database.

These are powerful little smokes, very complex. If you smoke one on an empty stomach you better be careful.

Tres Mystique is a great size in this line, however it is probably the strongest. If its strength was a bit over the top give the Belicoso #1 or (my favorite) the Enchantment a try.

Nice review, Like Matt said try the bigger sizes. This is a very good line of smoke and worth the price, in my opinion.

Listen to txmatt, the enchantment is an amazing smoke similar in shape to the fuente best seller. As it opens up it releases some great flavors especially white pepper. This cigar should be a staple in everyones humidors for those special occasions.

The VSG's are very good. The Larger size in the VSG Line are usually smaller.

Post Re: Ashton VSG Tres Mystique Review

Just had my first Tres Mystique last night. Great little cigar, I was very impressed. SeanGar reviewed it on Top25 cigar and I have to agree with his assessment that it is a very well made good smoke, but compared to the Party Short, it doesn't quite match up. IMO, the Tres Mystique may be the best domestic in this size range. If they were cheaper, I would have a box full of them. Thankfully, I still have a couple left waiting for me.

Re: Ashton VSG Tres Mystique Review

I just finished one of these. This cigar is very well constructed and burned perfectly. Now, the flavors were VERY overwhelming for me. I think my palatte has a long way to go before I will be able to sit back and truely enjoy one of these. I had a feeling this was going to be the case, so I purchased a few to keep in the humi for down the road.

All in all, a learning experience. I am a step further down the path of figuring out what I like in a good cigar.

Re: Ashton VSG Tres Mystique Review

I love the Trés Mystique! I agree that it is probably the strongest of the line but I love this little firecracker. The Robusto and Belicoso are much milder. Here's my review of one of these babies. BTW, the only negative to this line is the unusually high incidence of mold.

**********

Well, what can I say. This is one of those few cigars (like the Padron Anniversarios) that just never disappoints. The wrapper was a typically mottled mahogany. Oily and resilient, it's not what I'd call picture beautiful like the wrapper on a Torano Exodus 1959, but it suits this little powerhouse. The smell was pungent, suggesting a rich and powerful experiences.

Light-up was flawless and the burn was straight and steady. Smoke volume was plentiful and the body was rich and full. Solid tobacco flavors punctuated with mellow spiciness was the main profile. Good for 50 minutes of pleasure, this stick gradually became more assertive toward the end but remained smooth and powerful throughout. Highly recommended. In fact, put away a dozen or so to enjoy these gems as they develop.

Final note: This is one of the signature small sticks that I think competes with Cuba's best. The PAM Principe and FFOX Perfecxion5 are two others that come to mind.

Re: Ashton VSG Tres Mystique Review

I love that little cigar...My advice to those who want to try it and haven't yet is not to treat it like a short smoke and give it plenty of time to develop as it's smoked. It will be time well spent!
