Carlos Torano Cameroon 1916 Torpedo Review

Yesterday was my birthday but I actually celebrated it on Sunday with a massive cigar blowout that featured 8 sticks including a Padron 64, a DCM #1, Davidoff LE 05 Robusto Intenso, two ISOM and an Anejo. So Sunday I decided that it would be foolish to even try to match Saturday’s slice of heaven and get back on the ball with my reviews. I’ve heard so much good press about the Torano line that I picked up a couple of samplers to try and on top of that got like 4 in trade. I pulled out just my second one ever, the Carlos Torano Cameroon 1916 Torpedo.

It’s a well packaged stick, wrapped in cedar with decent banding. The prelight sniff is heavy on cedar but considering they wrapped the stick in a 2x4 of the stuff what else would you expect? I couldn’t get much else out of. The prelight draw has great sweet notes to it. The construction of this stick is daunting, its harder than the planks in my deck.

I was very concerned with the draw because of the construction and I was right to be. The draw on the stick is really tough; its harder than a lifer at a conjugal visit. It really impeded my enjoyment of the stick tho I decided to simply take it for what it was rather than to make it into what I wanted it to be. This baby burns ultra slow and cooler than a polar bear on the north pole sipping a milkshake. The smoke is nutty with bits of wood in it and a surprisingly mellow sweetness as an undercurrent, it’s a bit like drawing your smoke thru sugar cane. It burns exceptionally well as long as you have two hours to smoke it.

Appearance – 8
Construction – 8
Flavor – 8
Value – 10
Overall Experience -6
Overall Grade – 8.2

Final Verdict – Would smoke again. I’m definitely impressed by what Torano delivers for so little money, but they never quite are able to close the door with me. I plan to try one more of these to make sure the draw problem was not specific to the stick I had.

Nice review. You should try another one of these. One of the best Cameroon cigars on the market.

Definately planning to but next month looks like a lot of Fuente's getting smoked so I don't know when. I have like 3 more I think so it shouldn't be to hard.

These are very nice cigars and the draw opens up a bit if you let them sit for a while - say 6 months or so. I've got some Churchills (best size in this line) coming up on 1 year and they are mighty fine.

I laid down a box of these babies over 2 years ago. I have about 20 left today and I cannot tell you just HOW MUCH these improve with age. Physically they held up wonderfully and the draw and burn were way better after the aging. The flavor 'sweetened' up too, a little dry-tasting but sweet.

Concerning the tight draw, especially with Torpedos, I uasually have pretty good luck if I clip a little more off this seems to help, I've been kknown to clip quite a bit off to open up the draw. A cigar that has too tight a draw just dosent do it for me. It's like trying to drink a milkshake through a straw thats just to thick, sucks...

But I wouldnt give up on the Torano line I find most of thier cigars to be well constructed, give the others a shot after you smoke all those Fuente's.

thanks for the review. Try the churchill when you get a chance. I know its a long smoke, but I feel its the best of this line.

I typically avoid torps for that very reason, nothing to bring me down a few notches smoke wise like a tight draw.

I had the corona not long ago, and I was not impressed at all. I am smoking the Robusto now, and I must say, this cigar is very good. A nice, evening mellow out cigar. Not too tary that will leave welps in your throat...say like a T. Ligero. Packed with good flavors. Good cigar this time around...great with a margarita on da ROCKS!

Do you like these better than the Hemingway's? These are good, but not sure I can put them over the Short Story!

I know you didn't ask me but yes. I like these more than the Hemmingway's I've had. (most have had some hint of ammonia at some point) Maybe if I had an aged one, I'd like them more. For me, the Oliva Serie G Special G kills the Short Story every time I've had it.
