Padilla Hybrid FRESH from box Review

Size: robusto

I sprang for 2 boxes of these when c bid had the special, having never tried them before. I was just going to do the fridge-freezer-fridge on 'em like I do with all cigars, but I said "Ah, f**k it, I'm gonna smoke one fresh."

First 1/3:

Pretty uneventful for the first inch or so, nice enough flavor with a very short finish. Ash is a little flakey but burn and draw are perfect. I should also mention that this was one of the easiest clipping cigars ever. Used a cheapo double guillotine cutter and the cap just popped right off.

Second 1/3:

Flavor kicks up quite a bit and so does the finish. I would describe the flavor and aroma as tart and spicy, with a slight fruit flavor on the finish. So far, so good! Burn still perfect. Slight chemical flavor at about halfway point, tried a flame purge. It worked very well, chem taste was completely eliminated. The flame purge possibly had an effect on the flavor, because the fruitiness intensified a bit and the smoke began to leave a pleasant bite in the nostrils.

Final 1/3:

Flavor is really kickin' now! Not kickin' my ass, but just really THERE. This is strange, as I've never had this before, but I swear I can taste a liquor-like flavor. The finish is still fruity but not citrusy, more of a soft fruit flavor. Let the cigar die at a little under 2".

Final thoughts:

I was pretty impressed at how good this cigar tasted and burned 5 minutes out of the box. I think I will bury 1 box for quite some time, and dip into the open box every few months to see how they're doing. It's too bad these have been discontinued.

Thanks for reading.

I smoked through a few boxes of these and definitely think they benefit from 6 months sitting.

Good review man, grazi

I had one a few months ago and I really liked it. Not sure how much age was on it. I just got a box of them off of Cbid last week to pass out at a herf Im going to in July.

Oh hey, what do you mean by 'flame-purge'?

Nice review. I'm looking forward to smoking one of these based on your review. I also purchased a box and they are now resting, but I may have to burn one sooner than later!

I too got a box from C-bid and am looking forward to smoking one tonight. I like to see how they age as well.

Nice review!

I always flame purge, saved many a cigar that way....helpful tip below!

hold the flame so it goes directly into the ash. Hold it there
until the entire ash becomes white hot (generally about 10 - 15
seconds. Of course this does not need to be done if the cigar is already lit).

Then put the cigar into your mouth and put the flame a
short distance from the coal. Blow through the cigar fairly hard
(no, we're not trying to launch the white hot coal to the other
side of the room). When you start blowing you will create a
yellowish-orange flare. This color will change as you continue to
blow. When the flare goes to blue or clear, the cigar is ready to
smoke. There shouild be very little harshness . It should taste
GOOD!!
Another little tip: I always wait for the cigar to cool after a purge before I taste it again.

Re: Padilla Hybrid FRESH from box

I too have a box coming from Cbid.

Luckily, I still have a few left from my last box in the wineadoor. They are smokeable "fresh", but you will find they really improve as they rest.

Re: Padilla Hybrid FRESH from box

I received my box as well yesterday. I smoked one and for the price you cant beat it. Such an even burn with a great draw. I will let the rest sit for awhile and see if they are even better
